Leo kissed her cheek and left the table.

Great. Now she was alone with no one to buffer the remaining Suttons.

“Do you ride, Cassandra?” Whitney asked with a pretentious tone.

Ride what? A car? A boat? She tried to come up with a logical answer. “I ride the Underground every day.”

Eleanor laughed behind her hand, exchanging a knowing glance with Whitney.

Whitney puckered her lips in a childish pout. “Oh, dear. I thought you understood.”

Cassie still didn’t understand what was so funny, but she was pretty sure she was the target of a joke.

“I apologize for my wife.” Malcolm shot a pointed glance at Whitney. “She was asking if you ride horses.”

The Suttons likely had a stable of horses. Whitney’s seemingly harmless question was a not-so-subtle attempt to reveal if Cassie had any connections to the upper echelons of British society. Of course, Cassie didn’t, and that was the point of Whitney’s question. “No, I don’t,” she said, focusing on Whitney.

“What a pity,” Whitney said with a shake of her head.

Whitney’s response, combined with the arrogant tone was a perfect example of how wealthy people feigned politeness. And Cassiehated it.

Cassie was left alone at the table with people who despisedLeo and her. She didn’t have to sit there like a potted plant and endure their insults while she waited for Leo to return. “Excuse me.” Without hesitating, she got to her feet and left the ballroom.
