CHAPTER 59

CASSIE

So far this morning she’d heard raised voices behind the closed doors, then a man arrived in a panic, saying to Nigel that he was a solicitor. He was immediately escorted inside the room.

After the solicitor left, the room exploded with arguing. The board members exited next, full of spirited conversation. Malcolm stormed out then, stopping dead in his tracks to glare at her and her father. The security guards escorted Malcolm away. Holy shit. Was Malcolm being arrested on the spot?

“What the hell was that all about?” her father murmured. He turned to her, his eyes with wide curiosity.

He had no idea about Malcolm. It wasn’t her story to tell, and she wouldn’t break her promise to Leo. Her father would have to wait to find out.

Why hadn’t Leo and Alexander left the boardroom? Her heart would snap like a rubber band if she didn’t see Leo soon.

The doors opened, and Leo guided Alexander out of the room by the elbow.

She sprung to her feet and rushed to them. She glanced back and forth between the two men. Alexander appeared much frailer than when she last saw him at his birthday party. “Are you all right, Alexander?”

“I’m fine, my dear.” He patted her hand. “You should be with Leo. He needs you.”

Her eyes flew up to Leo. Was this bad news?

“Come here, Cassandra,” he said, letting go of his grandfather. He embraced her, whispering in her ear, “I love you.”

“I love you too,” she whispered back. “But if you don’t tell me what happened, I’m going to scream.”

Leo laughed and held her close.

“Leo is the new chairman and CEO of Sutton Properties,” Alexander said, his voice full of pride.

“You did it!” She wanted to shout for joy that he had achieved his goal.

“Yes,” Leo said with a broad smile, his eyes sparkling with happiness.

“I’m proud of you, Leo.” She was so full of love for him right now.

“Nikos!” Alexander greeted her father with a handshake. “I’m so glad you came.”

“Congratulations, Leo,” her father said, shaking Leo’s hand. “I want to apologize for my behavior. It wasn’t fair to you or Cassie. I’m sorry.”

“Thank you, Nikos. I appreciate it. And I’m glad it’s behind us now.”

“The three of us have a lot to talk about,” Alexander said. “Can you stay for a short meeting, Nikos?”

“Absolutely,” her father answered with a big grin.

Alexander turned to Leo. “I’m going to have a word with Malcolm before he leaves, and then we’ll speak with Nikos in my office.” He gave a nod to Cassie. “After our meeting, I want you to have a celebratory dinner with Cassandra and her parents. We’ll dig in tomorrow. You have to begin to assemble your team.”

“You should join us,” Cassie said, catching Leo’s approving grin.

“No, no.” Alexander shook his head. “I don’t want to impose.”

“You wouldn’t be imposing,” her father offered.

Alexander seemed interested, but hesitant.

“Please say you will,” Cassie urged. She couldn’t bear the thought of Alexander spending an evening alone after the board meeting.

“It won’t be the same without you,” Leo said.
