His eyes filled with compassion. “Tell me, and I’ll try to fix it for you.”

“If only it was that easy.”

“It can be.” He kissed her cheek. “If you let me.”

Why couldn’t she take what he offered? She wanted him, but she didn’t want to risk being hurt again. “I should go.”

Pushing the hair away from her face, he held her gaze. “No, you shouldn’t.” His voice was quiet and calm. “You’re upset about something. Let me stay with you until you’re feeling better.”

“Okay.”

Another gust blew around them, and the gate banged wildly in the wind.

He kept a hold on her, grabbed a chair from the patio table, and propped it against the gate. The slamming stopped.

“Come with me.” He led her to the lounger on her balcony. He sat with her in his strong arms.

Minutes ago, the bottom fell from her world, and now she was held by someone who cared enough to look after her. The pain of her heartbreak lessened.

“This feels good.” He whispered the words into her hair, his breath warm and comforting against her scalp.

Cassie lifted her head to look at him and reminded herself this was really happening.

He traced a finger gently over her cheek, and his eyes took in every inch of her face. “You are so beautiful.”

She wanted to believe him. He said she was beautiful like he was ready to worship her.

“So are you,” she said, unable to resist because he was.

He smiled and gave her a quick kiss, but she wanted more.

“Who are you?” She studied him. It was weird not to share names, but it didn’t matter in this moment. She trusted him.

He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. “I’ll tell you my name tomorrow. Just rest now.”

Cassie leaned her head against his chest. The wind calmed down with only the sound of insects and the rustling leaves stirring in the background.

“I’ll keep you safe. I promise,” he whispered.

Cassie believed him. Wrapping her arms around him, the steady rhythm of his heart soothed her. She took a full breath, content to be held in the arms of Eros.
