“Dad’s funeral.” Leo pushed down the sadness that had left a permanent wound on his heart. “One year, three months, and two weeks.”

Gramps’s eyes filled with emotion, and Leo wished he hadn’t stayed away for so long. His issues with Malcolm had nothing to do with his grandfather, who had taken an instant liking to him all those years ago. He patted Leo’s shoulders. “Well, you’re here now.”

“Nigel says you’re leaving for the day?”

“I’m meeting some friends at my club.”

“Well, I won’t keep you. I just wanted to come by and say hi and let you know I’ll be at the board meeting.”

“I’m glad. Why don’t you join me at the club?”

He would have accepted the offer, but for now it was important to keep a low profile with his family. When the board meeting was over, he’d make it up to Gramps. “Some other time. I need to do some work at home.”

Gramps took him by the elbow and leaned in with a conspiratorial whisper, “You can fill me in on all those gorgeous women you date.”

“I’m not dating anyone right now.” He caught himself from saying anything else but decided he could trust Gramps’s discretion. “But there is someone I’d like to be dating.” Although nothing was certain, he intended to be part of Cassandra’s life. The tricky part would be how Gramps would react to her being the daughter of Nikos Papadakis. The rivalry started between Nikos and his father, but Gramps had cheered from the sidelines.

Gramps slapped him on the back. “Now you have to come to the club. I want to hear everything about this woman who’s captivated you.”

He laughed to avoid giving an answer. He wasn’t going to deny it. Cassandra had captivated him, that much was true, but he wasn’t ready to share anything else about her until he felt more secure about their relationship. “I wish I could join you, but I really am swamped with work. However, I promise to come to your birthday party.”

Gramps’s face lit up. “I’m so glad you’ll be there.”

“Now, let me walk you out, and you can give me ideas for what you’d like for a gift.”

Gramps picked up his cane and took Leo’s elbow. “I don’t need anything but having you there and meeting this mysterious lady of yours.”
