Her phone pinged inside her purse.

“I’m sorry, let me turn this off.” She pulled out her phone and saw a text from Leo.

I can’t stop thinking about you, Deusa. I’ll call you later.

“Maybe it’s that new boyfriend.” He gave her a rare playful smile.

Izzy must have told everyone in the office. Her cheeks flushed with heat. “Is it that obvious?”

“Yes,” Michael said, still smiling. He got to his feet. “Cherish your time with him, Cassie. It’s too easy to believe you have forever.” He closed the door with a soft click.

The empty room filled with a deafening silence while she reflected on Michael’s advice. She deserved to be happy, and Leo deserved a second chance with her.

She read his message again and typed her reply.

I can’t wait to see you again.

The dots moved in the text box, and her pulse ticked faster waiting for his reply.

I’m counting the days until then. Lx

She typed her response wearing the world’s goofiest grin.

Me too. Cxo

Leo never judged her or tried to correct her. He was genuinely interested in her scholarly pursuits. Leo was also an honorable man. Someone who wanted to build communities that made a difference in people’s lives. Not to mention, he was gorgeous and sexy.

And now, here in this empty conference room, all the pieces fell together. He would be back soon, and she would tell him how she felt.

Her phone pinged with another text. It wasn’t Leo. It was a message from her father. She read it, and her stomach twisted into knots.

I saw the picture. Call me.

“Shit.”
