CHAPTER 33

CASSIE

“Leo!” Cassie called out, hurrying down the street to her flat. She’d decided at the last minute to pick up some flowers, and now she was going to make them late for lunch with his friends.

Leo looked up from his phone and waved. He approached her with long strides and a wide smile. He wore a pair of jeans and a black T-shirt that hugged his chest.

It was so good to see him again.

Her father had been furious about the pictures he’d seen in the press. In the end, all that mattered was her and Leo, and seeing his warm smile meant everything would be okay.

“I’m sorry I’m late—again,” she said, catching her breath.

“You’re going to give me abandonment issues.” Leo kissed her on the cheek.

“I don’t want to meet your friends empty-handed.” She waved a bouquet of pink and white peonies.

“They’re very pretty.” Leo took her hand. “You look beautiful today.”

“Thanks.” She smoothed out her midi floral sundress. “Most of my clothes are casual. It’s like I never left Greece.”

“I love that idea.” He squeezed her hand as they walked to his car. The last time she saw him he called herdeusa.Leo Sutton thought she, Cassie Papadakis, a perpetual self-loathing female, was a goddess.

Leo opened the passenger door of a sleek silver Porsche.

“No Land Rover?”

“It’s Sunday. I thought it would be fun to take something less sensible.”

He helped her inside. The split in the dress revealed her thigh. She forgot this dress had that opening.

“I love your dress even more now,” Leo said in a deep purr.

Memories of him making love to her rushed back, reminding her of how he enjoyed her body.

Leo climbed into the driver’s seat, started the engine, and roared away from the curb. He turned to her with a lingering gaze. Maybe he was having the same thoughts about that night.

Her cheeks flushed with heat thinking of them being together again. She needed to focus on the present.

“Tell me about Ben and Amanda.”

“I met Ben and Amanda at Cambridge. He’s worked at a couple of investment capital firms in London. A few years ago, I ran into him in Paris, and he wanted to take a chance with me. Amanda is a graphic designer, and they have two boys. Jacob is six, and Henry is four.”

“Have they met any of your other girlfriends?” Her question exposed her insecurity, but comparisons would be made between she and the others.

Leo kept his eyes on the road. “Not since Whitney.” A muscle in Leo’s jaw twitched.

Whitney was still a sensitive subject.

Cassie took a deep breath. Bringing her to Ben and Amanda’s home would be a big deal for him. Best friends didn’t hesitate to give their opinions. His friends had seen Leo with Whitney.

The space between them became uneasy.

Leo glanced over to her. “You’re nervous.”

“And you’re thinking about Whitney.” She blurted it out without thinking. It was a stupid thing to say, but she was curious about the woman who’d made such an impression on Leo.

“I got over Whitney a long time ago.”
