“Shh, Deusa.”

“Here we are,” the waiter said cheerfully, returning to their table. “Oysters for two.” He placed an artfully arranged platter of oysters piled on crushed ice. “Anything else right now?”

“No, thank you,” Leo said, not taking his hand from her. He spoke in a calm and controlled voice.

The waiter turned and left.

“We should eat.” She removed her hand from his erection with one last lingering caress.

“You read my mind.” His mouth curved into a naughty grin. “Only I wasn’t thinking of oysters.”

“Shh, Leo,” she said with a giggle, picking up an oyster and loosening it with the small fork.

His finger stroked her folds.

The fork fell from her hand, hitting the platter.

“Someone is a little distracted,” Leo said with a deep chuckle. “I can’t wait to be inside you,” he murmured into her ear.

She closed her eyes. “Do you…want horseradish sauce?” she asked, taking a few deep breaths and trying to refocus.

“I like them plain. I can taste them better that way.”

She sputtered with laughter. “You make it sound so dirty.”

“Things are about to get a lot dirtier.” He took the oyster from her hand and placed it near her lips. “Be a good girl and open your mouth.” His tone shifted to something darker, an invitation to join him in this erotic game.

She wanted to please him and obey his command. All her attention focused on Leo; she didn’t care now who watched them. She parted her lips, and she slipped one hand under the tablecloth to rest on his thigh.

Leo held the oyster near her bottom lip. “That’s it. Now open wide for me.”

Tipping her head back, Leo slid the oyster past her lips. She took her time chewing the oyster, savoring the briny flavors before swallowing.

Leo watched her, his eyes burning with seduction. “Your lips are so damn sexy.” He used a napkin to wipe the corners of her mouth. “Now it’s your turn to feed me.”

She picked up an oyster and held it to him as his lips parted in anticipation.

“Hello, Cassie.” She froze. That voice. It wasn’t possible. Owen was here. She dropped the oyster onto the platter and lifted her eyes to Leo.

Leo held her gaze for a moment and then glanced at Owen. “Can I help you?” he asked, his eyes narrowing.

Owen, wearing a tuxedo, stood at their table. His cold blue eyes focused on them with distaste. Her stomach lurched. This encounter was not going to end well.

Daphne, with her blond hair pulled back and held in place with a rhinestone headband, stood beside him. She wore an ill-fitting, beaded, silver evening gown and her eyes were wide with anxiety. Cassie couldn’t believe they were here.

Ignoring Leo, Owen said, “Aren’t you going to say hello, Cassie?”

“Who are you?” Leo asked Owen.

“This,” Cassie said, through a tight throat, “is Dr. Owen Bell and his fiancée, Daphne Garrison.” She’d forgotten about the Hayford Fellowship dinner. Owen had come to London to pick up his award.

“I’m sorry we interrupted your dinner.” Daphne gripped Owen’s arm. “Let’s go.”

Owen yanked his arm away, never taking his eyes off Leo. “And gosh, you don’t need an introduction. You’re the famous Leo Sutton.”

She’d heard Owen use this phony enthusiastic voice when he mocked someone. He played this stunt off as harmless fun, but it wasn’t. It was intentionally cruel and demeaning, and he enjoyed doing it. How could she have ever cried over losing him?

“Okay. You’ve said hello, and now it’s time to leave us alone.” Leo turned back to Cassie. He brushed a lock of hair over her shoulder, holding her eye contact as a reminder that Owen’s presence didn’t matter to them.
