“You’re not magically bound to him until the marriage is consummated. Right now, the union is incomplete. We don’t even know if it fully took.”

“What does that mean? Can I get out of it?”

“I believe so. We need to get to my camp, see if Candice can free you.”

“Candice. Who is that?”

“She’s a witch who’s been studying my people.”

“Like Lloren? I don’t want—”

“She is nothing like Lloren,” he assures me. “She is kind, and if there is a way to break the connection, she’ll find it.” He reaches down and pulls me to my feet. “Right now, we need to focus on getting as far away from the kingdom as we can. As soon as we do, I’ll begin the search for my camp.”

“You don’t know where it is?”

He shakes his head. “They move and reform every few weeks to keep from becoming complacent. We’ll find them, though. I know we will.”

“And what if we don’t?”

“Then I will get you to that portal, and you can leave this world behind. One way or another, Ember, I’ll protect you with the last breath in my chest.”

I don’t dare consider him dying and leaving me out here alone, and since I can’t trust my voice right now, I simply nod.

Here’s hoping our survival doesn’t come to losing his life—or mine.
