“I’m going to do the best I can, but this will take days to fully heal without draining myself.”

“Okay.”

His hand touches my back. It stings where he touches me, but even as it does, the pain begins to fade as my body warms where he touches it.

A golden glow surrounds us, flittering about like mist.

He moves his hands down, then down again, until it’s at the very base of my spine. Moments pass, minutes turning into what feels like hours as we remain mostly submerged in the water.

All the while, Rafferty doesn’t speak above a whisper, and even those words are in a language I can’t understand.

He slips the dress down my arms, letting his fingers trail over the broken skin as he goes. Then, he stops and tugs the tattered remains back up.

“I need you to face me,” he says, tone barely above a growl.

I do, more than ready to feel the same relief on my abdomen.

Rafferty’s gaze drops to my face. His expression is strained, jaw set. “I need you to remove your dress. I will close my eyes and not open them until you’ve covered your breasts.”

My heart hammers. Though I know it’s foolish, Taranus’s words run through my brain. She is nothing impressive.

Tears spring to my eyes as I nod and avert my gaze. Reaching over, I tug my dress down until the fabric pools at the top of the water. Then, I reach out and grip his arm as I float up and shove the dress down. It takes quite a bit of effort, especially with the pain, but I manage to get free of the fabric before wrapping both arms around to hide my breasts. “Okay,” I whisper, shutting my eyes so tightly it intensifies the pounding that’s been in my head since I woke in that cave.

Rafferty sucks in a breath. “Ember—”

“I know. Not impressive. Please, just fix me. I want to get dressed.”

He doesn’t say another word. Nothing to counter what I’d said—nothing to confirm it—so I remain perfectly still, listening to the water sloshing over my body as he presses his hands to my waist, my stomach, my thighs. Healing my body when I fear the greatest injury I have—is something not even he can fix.
