Rafferty leans in and presses his forehead to mine. “You are not ruined, you hear me? None of that matters to me. You matter. And I love you no less now than I did that first moment I laid eyes on you.”

Thunder booms ahead, and we both turn our heads to the sky.

“I’m scared,” I choke.

“Don’t be.” But Rafferty’s whispered tone tells me he’s just as scared as I am.

The wind begins to pick up, ripping at me now. “I don’t want to die. I thought I would be okay, but I want to stay with you.” I cling to him, gripping his arms. Surrendering to my fate now feels even crueler than it did with my diagnosis.

My chest tightens, my throat burning with emotion even in this illusion woven to ease me into what comes next.

Rafferty’s jaw hardens, and a tear slips from his cheek. “I don’t think what we want most matters anymore.”

Rain pours from the sky, and Rafferty flickers out of view, leaving me standing alone. I spin, searching for him. “Rafferty!” I scream. “Rafferty, please come back!”

Thunder claps, and the world goes dark.
