“And the heads?” I choke out. “What are their purpose?”

Her smile turns carnal. “They are my past lovers.” Releasing me, she leans down so she is mere inches from my face. “Rafferty will join them when I’m done with him, too. Then you may walk the halls and stare into his cold, dead eyes until the day your broken bond takes your life, too.”

The voice in my head screams at me to stand up and fight, to run, to flee—even as I know there is likely no way I am ever getting away from her. But, still, I’d rather go out with a fight. Gripping the chain with both hands, I yank it from her grasp.

She lets it go, and I turn to sprint.

Though, I don’t make it even halfway down the hallway of hell before I stumble and fall, my lungs burning from exhaustion. Her feet pad softly behind me until she comes around and kneels in front of me.

“Whatever were you planning to do, my pet?” Reaching forward, she strokes my hair, and I do my best not to vomit on her bare feet.

“Get the fuck away from you,” I snarl.

She beams back at me as she grips my hair and yanks my head back. “You strike me as an intelligent beasty, so hopefully my words will sink in. Otherwise, you will be punished.” Ailis leans in so closely I can see the specks of black in her eyes. “You will get nowhere. You are nothing but a mere human, a pest I plan on keeping until I tire of you—or you die.” Her grip tightens and I blink away tears. “Do we understand each other?”

Swallowing hard, I growl, “Yes.” The lie is an easy one. A necessary one. Play nice now, escape later.

“Good.” Ailis releases me and straightens, retrieving the chain. “Let us go, then. Master is hungry.”
