Chapter One

Flynn

Shrillscreamsdrilledintomy brain, and my ears rang as I tried to shove through the crowd. Women were howling my name, an exorbitant number of manicured hands tearing at my coat and trying to grab me. Even years into this celebrity journey, women surprised me with their actions and behavior.

It certainly had gotten worse after the announcement of me being the bachelor on the reality dating show,Love in a Small Town.

I’d been willing to take the longer flight to get home to avoid being in a big airport. Traveling to smaller airports sometimes helped avoid the onslaught of women waiting for me at my destination. Unfortunately, snow had derailed my plans, and now that was the exact problem I faced.

“Flynn! Flynn! Can you sign my shirt?”

“Have you started filming yet? Pick me! I’ll be your wife!”

“Holy cow,” I muttered, pulling my baseball cap further down over my eyes. Apparently, the cap and sunglasses disguise only worked for superheroes, not people like me.

Using my bags as a shield, I continued to shove my way through, desperate for quiet.

Desperate for home.

Over the last few years, I’d bounced around between Utah, California, and Oregon, only coming back to my home state occasionally. Coming all the way back to Pine Cove Springs was even more rare.

Distracted by my train of thought, I tripped, but I caught myself before I fell. Glancing around to see what I’d stumbled on, my eyes fell on a woman getting trampled by the crowd. In a split-second decision, I reached down and felt for her hand.

“I’ve got you,” I replied, yanking her to her feet. “Let’s go this way.”

“Thank you so much.” Her words were breathless as I weaved in and out of people, determined to find an exit and jump into a car.

“You’re okay, right?” I asked her.

“I’m fine, thank you. Honestly, I was just trying to get out of baggage claim and got caught up in the chaos.”

Knowing she was okay, I didn’t hesitate to continue pulling us toward the front of the airpoirt, where my driver waited for me.

“Can I give you a ride?” I asked her. “They’re going to stay on my heels till I’m in the car driving away.”

“Sure, that would be great. I was going to just wait for a cab anyway.”

“It’s the least I can do.”

We burst through the edit doors and headed straight for my car. Thankfully, my driver knew the drill and had the door open for us to dive into. As we pulled it closed, he was already jumping into the front seat.

“Nice to see you again, sir.”

“You too, Charles. Been awhile.”

Our eyes connected in the rearview mirror, and I knew what he was thinking. What anyone who saw me leaving the airport with a woman on my arm would be thinking.

I took my cap off and ran my hand through my hair, finally taking a moment to catch my breath.

“You famous or something?” She gave me a once-over as she settled into her seat.

“Something like that.” I let out a low chuckle and turned to look at her. “I’m Flynn.”

“Amber.” She smiled at me, reaching around and pulling her hair over the front of her shoulder. It was almost jet black, offsetting her bright blue eyes. I was a sucker for blue eyes, but it wasn’t because of the woman in front of me.

That woman waited in Pine Cove Springs, strictly off-limits.

“Where to, Amber?”
