“What do you mean?”

“I don’t think we have a lot in common. So much of his life seems to revolve around the snow, and I don’t know anything about that.”

I swallowed, unsure of what to say. Flynn seemed superficial, all about sports and not much else. But there was so much more to him than snow.

“Rom-coms.”

She raised her eyebrow. “What?”

“Rom-coms. He’d never tell anyone, but he’s a sucker for them. Make sure you get him alone if you’re going to bring them up, or he’ll deny it all day long.”

“Why are you helping me? Don’t you want him for yourself?”

That was the plan, wasn’t it? I was supposed to be competing to win Flynn’s heart, just like everyone else.

“I’ve got a treasure trove of information on him. If this costs me his love, then I guess we weren’t meant to be.” I laughed, though it wasn’t entirely real.

Something about encouraging my roommate to date Flynn didn’t sit right, but she was a kind person. The type of person he deserved if he’d just settle down. Maybe she’d want to travel with him as he went from training center to training center. Maybe she could. I didn’t have that freedom.

“Is there anything I’m forgetting?” She stood and rotated.

“Gloves?” I suggested.

“Right!” She laughed and turned to dig through her bag.

“Do you have hand warmers?”

She tipped her head in question. “Hand warmers?”

I dug a package out of my bag. “You have to open them and break up all the little stuff inside. It activates and creates a cozy little place for your hands. They’re great if you’re going to be in the snow for a while. Pass me your gloves.”

They were brand new, likely purchased in one of the shops right outside of town. Luckily for her, there was a spot to tuck a hand warmer into each glove.

“You’re by far the nicest person here,” Candace replied, hugging me after I finished showing her how to use them.

“I doubt that, but thank you.”

“I’ve talked with everyone else, and trust me, if I had to choose anyone for Flynn to pick, if he doesn’t pick me, of course, it would be you.”

“Well, thanks? I think?” I chuckled and turned back to gathering my things for the date.

Uneasiness crept up on me, making me dread something I usually enjoyed. A big group date with Flynn. I guess I’d see what this show was about soon enough.

I wish I could say that sharing a date with eleven other women didn’t bother me. That helping teach kids at the ski school I still volunteered with regularly wasn’t awkward and didn’t make me feel an odd sort of possessiveness I wasn’t familiar with.

But watching those women, especially Regina, pretend to like the kids, only to turn around and fawn over Flynn, gave me feelings. Ones I wasn’t particularly fond of.

“Miss Harper?” Phoebe Brooks tugged on my arm.

“Yeah, sweetie?” I tore my attention away from the other women and focused on my friend’s daughter.

“Today is kind of strange.”

“You nailed it, kiddo. How do you feel about the board today?”

“A little better. I’ve only fallen twice.” She beamed up at me, and I wished I could reach out to her mom and thank her for enrolling her in ski-school. She had to have known this would be a date from paperwork, and I was thankful for the familiarity.

“That’s way better than last week. Different board?”
