“Too many to commit to?”

“Come on, do you really think so little of me?”

Like a deer caught in headlights, she froze.

“I guess that’s really not fair to say.”

“No,” I agreed.

“What about Audrey Grant?”

I’d answer anything she asked me, especially in a safe space like this with no cameras. But not about Audrey, I couldn’t. Signed documents between us prevented me from being honest about the situation, and I’d put myself into that position.

But I’d never imagined I’d be ‘dating’ Harper Evans when I agreed to the show.

“Harper, I can’t.”

“Fine.” She spun on her heel and left the counter, exiting through a door at the back of the café section.

I blew out a breath, angry that I’d gotten myself into this situation. Angrier still that I’d done what I thought was right, and the repercussions were traveling further than I’d ever expected.

“Harper, I’m sorry. I—you’re working on flowers? It’s one a.m.” The fight left me at the sight of her table piled with roses.

Harper shrugged and continued to separate the long stems on her workspace.

“When else am I supposed to work? I’m stuck at the inn all day long for filming.”

“About that,” I began, pulling up a work stool on the other side of the counter. “I’ve left it alone for as long as I can. How did you manage this setup?”

“I managed the floral gig.” She chuckled. “I got conned into the show.”

“You mean to tell me you didn’t sign up to find love on a reality TV show?”

She lifted her eyes briefly to mine before turning her gaze back down to her work. “No.”

I watched her hands, delicate but deft as she untangled the large mass of rose stems and spread them out.

“What are you doing?”

“I need petals.”

“For what?”

“I don’t ask, they don’t offer.”

“You have to pull all those petals off by hand?”

“It’s really not the labor-intensive job it sounds like.” She smiled. “I have a secret.”

“Are you allowed to share?”

“Might have to kill you afterward.” She raised her gaze to mine again.

“Might be worth the risk,” I grinned.

A smile played around her lips.

“I’m sure you’re thinking that you’ve got to pull each petal off. He loves me, he loves me not, right?”
