She wasn’t wrong.

Wewere.

“How are you holding up?” Eira’s soft voice manages to cut through the bulk of the panic, and I glance down at her. Violet eyes stare up at me, her expression haunted.

“I just want her back.”

“We all do, Tarnley.”

“I’m in love with her.” Saying the words out loud to someone other than Bronywyn somehow makes them more real. And based on Eira’s soft smile, the way her gaze drifts to Fearghas, she knows exactly what it is I’m talking about.

“I’m happy to hear you say it aloud. It’s been far too long, Tarnley. Too long to love and not act.”

“You tell him, then?”

Her eyes widen, but she doesn’t reply. “Our situation is a bit different.”

“Ho—”

“We have a plan,” Rainey announces. “A dumb one, but one, nonetheless.”

The elevators ding, and Walker steps in. “Am I too late?”

“You’re just in time for the reckless part, partner.”

He grins at Rainey. “I do love a bit of recklessness.”

“Glad to hear it because you’re going to be our magnet.”

He arches an eyebrow.

“Magnet?” Eira questions.

“I’m going to draw them out,” Walker replies with a smile. He cracks his knuckles and rolls his neck. “This should be fun.”

“Yeah, well, don’t go getting yourself killed, psychic.”

He smiles at Rainey. “Wouldn’t dream of it. No one else could work with you.”

Elijah barks out a laugh, and Rainey elbows him in the gut. “Walker is going to make himself known while we sneak in through the back. Having Ridley dematerialize us and take us in is far too risky, especially since we have no clue what type of wards are in place. So he goes in as an exit strategy, nothing more.”

“I swear. You lot are going to owe me a lot of favors when all this is over. I don’t do shit for free.”

“Yeah, yeah, we get it. Now shut the fuck up and let me finish.” Rainey clears her throat. “We go in and find Bronywyn. Fearghas should be able to sense her dark magic once we’re inside.”

“And if he can’t sense it? They could have her in iron.” I ask, stepping forward and crossing my arms. I know they haven’t taken her power because, as she pointed out, I would be dead if they had. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t find a way to shield her.

“We hope your bond is strong enough to lead us to where she is.”

“It’s not a beacon. I can only tell you if she’s close.”

“That’s all we need, brother.” Elijah clasps me on the shoulder.

“I—” Acid floods my veins, and I fall to my knees, grinding my teeth together as I try not to yell in agony. My vision wavers, my breathing labored as though I’m trying to suck oxygen through a straw.

“What is wrong?”

“I don’t—” And then I hear her. The brain-splitting scream that I know can only belong to one person. I stare up at them as the pain fades. “It’s Bronywyn. They’re killing her.”
