The dagger is back in my face, centimeters from my eye.

“Councilman?”

“What?” he growls at the witch behind him.

“There’s a psychic here to see you.”

“A psychic?”

I don’t even think the name or let myself hope it’s a rescue party. Mainly because I’m worried that whatever I think is being relayed to this asshole.

“Guy says he has some info for you. Something he saw in a vision.”

“I thought they were all dead.”

“Apparently not.”

“You checked him out?”

“Yes, sir. He is what he says he is.”

My new friend turns to me and glares. “I will be back for you.”

“See you soon.” I blow a kiss at him, and he yanks on my hair. Though, to be honest, the pain from that dulls in comparison to everything else I’m feeling.

After tossing his blade onto a nearby table, he leaves, and the warlock standing guard moves back into place in front of the door.

The way I see it, I have two options.

Option number one, I stay where I am and risk death.

Option number two, I at least try to escape and definitely die.

Since option two may mean taking a few of these bastards out with me, I opt for that one. Putting on my best pout face, I stare up at the guard. “Hey.”

He glares at me. “What do you want, traitor?”

“I have an itch. Please. It’s horrible.” Still wearing Tarnley’s shirt, I’m a hell of a lot more bare than I’d care for. But, since I have to work with what I’ve got, I arch back and bare damn near everything but my nipples. “Right on my sternum. Can you scratch it?”

Even in my current state, his greedy gaze drinks me in. “One itch.”

“Thank you. You’re my hero.”

Careful steps bring him closer to me, and the moment his finger touches my skin, I lunge forward and bite down on his throat. Copper tang fills my mouth, but I don’t let the nausea in my gut stop me. I bite down harder and hang on as he yanks away from me.

Using the strength I have left, I drive my knee up into his chest.

Once.

Twice.

Three times, until he slumps down. I release him. Blood dripping from my mouth, I know I look like an animal, but I don’t pay that too much attention as I use my foot to flip him over and grip the keys to my shackles.

With great difficulty, I manage to unlock one side then the other. Slipping on blood, I scramble to my feet and stumble toward the blade the councilman left on the table. Palming it, I take a deep breath and step out into the hall.

It’s empty.

Hugging the sides, I tuck into corners, doing my best to stay out of view as I make my way through the labyrinth. Since his portal dropped me right into that room, I’m not even exactly sure where I am.
