“Which is a load of garbage. You and I both know you’re here because you owed me.”

Chasin feigns offense by gaping and pressing a palm to his heart. “You wound me, Bronywyn. After all, we were very nearly family.”

The memory of his brother gasping for breath moments before his head was removed flashes into my brain, and I growl. “You allowing your brother to be beheaded ended that chance.”

“Allowing? More like, not allowing myself to become a target. Can you blame me?”

“Yes. I really fucking can.” Not hungry anymore, I toss the apple in the trash and take my coffee toward the stairs. I pause just before I reach them and glance over, not surprised to see Chasin followed me. “You want to stick around? Fine. But you and I are not friends, Chasin. You need to come to terms with that before making a decision that will potentially screw you over in the long run.”

“As I told you last night, I aim to be on the right side of history. And you, my dear, are the right side. Well worth getting screwed over.” He winks.

I ignore his pathetic inuendo, and with a curt nod, I head back up the stairs, a plan forming in my mind. I will make this city safe, ending the immediate threat to my once friends, and then I will take my seat as head of one single council governing all factions.

One woman to rule them all.
