“I’m not giving up on you!” I call into the house.

Her grin spreads. “Then I look forward to bathing in your blood.” With the wave of her hand, the door knits back together and slams in my face.

“I won’t give up,” I whisper again, as I try to mentally form a plan that won’t end in death for either of us.

The doorto my apartment is unlocked, so I shove it open with ease and am greeted with five pairs of concerned eyes.

Rainey, Elijah, Delaney, Cole, and Rainey’s psychic partner, Walker, all get to their feet, the latter crossing his arms as he studies me. “You’re alive, then.”

“Obviously,” I retort, heading straight for the whiskey in my cabinet. Maybe if I drink the entire bottle at once, I’ll feel something—anything other than this bone-deep failure in my body.

“We were worried.” Delaney’s smile is soft, a direct contrast to Bronywyn’s savage grin still burned into my brain from less than an hour ago.

“Nothing to worry about.” I hold out both arms. “As you can see, I’m perfectly fine.”

“Wounds are not just physical, brother.” Elijah’s words are little more than gravel grating against my nerves.

“I’ve got nothing to say about it.” Taking a swig straight from the bottle, I lean back against the counter and study the group. “What is our new plan? Because I’m not willing to give up on her just yet.”

“She doesn’t seem to me like she wants to be rescued,” Rainey replies, dryly. “She and her new warlock boy-toy seem pretty damn comfortable to me.”

That sure as hell gets my attention. I whirl on the hunter. “Warlock boy-toy?”

“Did you not see him?” Elijah questions. “Or hell, sense him?”

I shake my head while trying to recall anything that seemed out of the ordinary. Truth be told, I was a bit distracted by waking up on Bronywyn’s couch to take much stock of my surroundings. Which was a dumbass thing not to do. “I didn’t sense anyone else.”

“She seemed pretty pissed at him for us being able to find her,” Delaney explains. “My guess is that she didn’t want to be found, and he was her plan.”

A soft knock on the door has us all turning our attention to it. “Come in.”

At my invitation, the door opens, and Drexel steps in with Magnolia at his side. The young hunter has been hanging around pack lands alongside the young witch. They’re the only two from our group allowed out there ever since the pack alpha lost both her father and mate to the fight against Lucy.

I may have never cared much for Jack, but his death still shook me.

“Sorry we’re late.”

“I didn’t realize there was a time we were all supposed to be here,” I say dryly, as I turn back to Elijah.

He shrugs. “We needed to regroup in case you didn’t make it back.”

“And what was your plan if I didn’t??”

“Storm in and kick her fucking teeth in, obviously,” Rainey interjects.

“You’re better then?”

I turn to Magnolia. The young witch is watching me cautiously. “I’m fine.”

“Good.” Then she turns to the rest of the group. “You saw her? Bronywyn?”

They nod.

Walker, who’s been silent until now, gets to his feet. “Go ahead and tell them, Magnolia.”

“Tell us what?” Rainey looks from her partner to the young witch. Even Drexel looks surprised, and he spends more time with Magnolia than anyone else.
