Tarnley

“This is a fucking bloodbath.” Rainey glares down at the dead, a scowl on her face.

“You’re sure it was Bronywyn?” Delaney questions. Rainey doesn’t speak, just gestures to a piece of paper pinned to the door with a silver blade.

I have no need to read it, the words I read the second I arrived are branded forever in my brain.

Seems you hunters are letting your duties slide. No worries, I’ll clean up your messes for you. You’re welcome.

-Bronywyn

Broken bodies of vampires are strewn all over the warehouse, alongside a pile of human bodies in various stages of decomposition. From where I stand, I can smell the Vicks vapor rub Rainey, Walker, Delaney, Cole, and Elijah have swiped beneath their noses to keep them from losing the contents of their stomachs and adding to the stench.

Me? I want to smell all of it.

To see all of it.

Because it’s going to be the only way I can come around to Fearghas’s belief that Bronywyn is too far gone to save.

“Captain Reynolds is on her way,” Walker announces, as he shoves his phone back into his pocket.

Since she’s married to a shifter, the captain is well apprised of all things supernatural going on in Billings.

“My team is on the way, as well,” I add. “Once she gives us the all-clear, we’ll clean this up.”

Wood crunches, and I shift my attention to Delaney, who’s currently seething while cradling her hand.

“Was that helpful?” Rainey asks, dryly.

Delaney pins her with a glare. “She’s on a fucking warpath.”

“Not too different from the one you were on a couple of months ago.”

“Thanks for the reminder,” Delaney replies. “I thought you stood on the side that believes she needs to be put down. That how you viewed me, too?”

Rainey shakes her head. “You weren’t this far gone. You lost your fucking head, that’s for damn sure. But it’s the dark magic that makes Bronywyn more dangerous.”

“We kill her, and Tarnley dies,” Elijah reminds them.

“We may not have a choice.”

All eyes turn to me. “What did you just say?” Delaney questions, her eyes screaming betrayal.

Shit, I haven’t even had the chance to tell them that I ran into her mere hours ago. “Bronywyn is not the same. There is not a single being on this planet who wants to refuse to see it more than me, but the fact remains. She is going to tear this city apart.”

“So far, she hasn’t done anything but take out bad supers, though,” Delaney defends. “The same ones we could have killed.”

“But she did it using dark magic. And it seems to me she’s gunning for the two of you.” Walker holds up the note. I don’t bother mentioning to them what she said earlier, and I sure as hell don’t point out that I agree with him.

Bronywyn is on a warpath. A killing spree. And although I want to ignore it, I also know it won’t end with supernaturals who are breaking The Accords. One day, very soon, Delaney and Rainey will try to stop her, and she will kill them.

Of that, I am deathly sure.

A car beeps outside, signaling Paloma’s arrival, and we all glance toward the side door as she strolls in.

Only, she’s not alone.
