Now it’s my turn to be pissed the hell off. “I don’t give two shits about myself in this scenario, Bronywyn.Youare who I care about. And honestly, if you were to go, there wouldn’t be a damn thing in this life worth living for.”

Her breath catches, a slight reaction to my words that I would have missed if not for my excellent hearing. “You sure have a funny way of showing it.”

Sensing a crack in the thick armor she always wears, I take a step closer. “I did what I thought I had to do in order to save you, Bronywyn. That’s all.”

“So, manipulating my feelings for you was worth it?”

“No. And if I could go back, I wouldn’t do that again.”

“No?”

“Fuck no.” I take another step closer. “The next time I put my hands on you, it will be because we both can no longer deny what’s between us. What’s been between us for a long-damned time.”

She sucks in a breath. “You lost your chance with me, Tarnley.”

“You may say that now. But we’re not done. We willneverbe done.” I turn away before remembering why I was here in the first place. Bronywyn is still behind me, so I face her again. “The council wants you to turn yourself in.”

She snorts and shakes her head. Although she tries to hide it, I don’t miss the fear that flashes through her eyes. “So they can kill me? No, thanks.”

“They won’t. The council member assured us you would be safe.”

“Let me say this again since you don’t seem to grasp the concept. I am not going to get rid of this magic. It has made me stronger, and now I can do what needs to be done in this city.”

“They’re going to send bounty hunters after you.”

I expect her to be surprised, to be fearful, but instead, she smiles. “About time I got their attention.”

“This is what you want? To be hunted like a feral animal?”

She steps toward me and grins. “It’s exactly what I want, Tarnley. After all, how can a new regime rise, if the last one is not burned to ash?”

Turning on her heel, she marches back into her house and slams the door. My phone rings, so I withdraw it, still staring at the closed door. I know she’s there, tucked away just on the other side. I can feel her presence, hear her breathing.

“What is it?” I snap into the phone.

“Get your ass to our apartment,” Rainey replies. “Elijah and I have something to tell you.”

I grunt and end the call, shoving the cell back into my pocket. “I will never give up on you, Bronywyn. You are everything to me, and one of these days, you’re going to see it, too.”
