Bronywyn

“What in the hell do you think you’re doing here?” she demands as she conjures a ball of energy in her left palm,

“Visiting an old friend,” Rainey replies. “So nice to see you again.”

Knowing the magic is active, I release Delaney and Rainey and stroll forward, careful to keep part of my consciousness on holding us here. “Your magic will do you no good.”

“I’m far more powerful than you.”

“Perhaps,” I reply. “But Delaney’s got more magic in her pinky finger than either of us, so I’m not overly concerned.”

Odette glares at Delaney then turns back to me. “What the hell do you want? You are all fugitives of the Immortal Council. Come to turn yourselves in?”

“Hardly,” Rainey replies.

“Tell me,” I say as I move closer to her desk and run a finger over the soft wood. I, of course, cannot feel it, but Odette doesn’t know that. “Was it you that put the hit out on Rainey?”

“Excuse me?”

“We know it was someone above the Immortal Council, and I can’t imagine you suddenly came into all this power.”

Odette is silent a moment before finally nodding. “Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she was a vessel for the original witch. We’ve known it since the day she was born.”

“And you didn’t kill her then—why?”

“Because we didn’t want her dead. Our intention was only to push her out of Billings.”

“You knew I was going to go to Salem.”

“It was the obvious choice. We did not, however, foresee the vampire, Elijah, stepping in.”

“So the bloodsuckers who nearly beat me to death in the alley?”

“They would never have killed you,” she says. “In fact, they were getting ready to leave when your hero showed up.”

“They nearly killed me!”

“We needed you to find the box.”

“Why?”

“So you would open it and destroy Heather.”

“I’m sorry.” I close my eyes and shake my head then open them again. “You wanted Heather dead?”

“Of course, I did.” Odette takes a seat back behind her desk. “Heather was a threat to me—to all of us—and she needed to be dealt with.”

“And instead of simply keeping the box buried, you decide opening it and letting us sort through the mess was the best route?” Rainey yells and takes a step forward.

“You did exactly as we wanted.”

“You murdered my sister!”
