“What the fuck are those?” I ask.

“Court summons.”

“And what court is it that’s summoning me?”

He tosses the folders at me, careful to not reach over the threshold of my front door. “Not just you. The Councils are summoning both of you.”

“Which one?” Tarnley demands.

Chasin grins. “All of them.”

Rage burns in my chest, but I swallow hard rather than blast him with the magic urging itself to break free. As I recently learned, anger is a motivator that rarely leads to success. I hand off the envelope with Tarnley’s name to him and glare back at Tarnley. “My infractions?”

Chasin glances from me to Tarnley. “Too many to name. Though, fucking a vampire and attempting to overthrow the council are definitely at the top of the list.” He turns back to me. “But don’t worry, you aren’t alone.” He winks and turns away. “See you soon.”

I slam the door in his face before I lose it completely and try to kill all three of them. Then I open the manilla envelope and withdraw the letter within.

Bronywyn Walsh,

You are hereby summoned to appear before the Witch Council within twenty-four hours of receiving this notice.

Your charges include, but are not limited to:

-Breaking The Accords with a forbidden relationship with Shay Tarnley.

-The murder of three dozen witches within the council chambers.

-Being an accomplice to the murder of Councilman Maxil Ross.

You are free to argue any of these charges and plead your case, though your fate will be carried out by the council on the day of your hearing.

Signed,

The Witch Council

The Vampire Council

The Shifter Council

The Immortal Council

“What the fuck is going on?” Tarnley demands as he hands me his own. I scan the page, noting his only infractions include his relationship with me and assisted murder of Councilman Maxil Ross.”

“All four of the councils are involved,” I say as I stuff both papers back into the same envelope with shaking hands. All four councils are involved. In the entire history of our supernatural government, there has never been a trial held by all of them.

My phone rings, so I rush toward the kitchen and snatch it off the counter to answer it, ignoring the curious looks of Deissy and Winnie. “Hello?”

“You won’t fucking believe what just happened.”

“You received a summons to appear before the councils?” I ask.

Rainey is silent a moment. “You got one, too.”

“I did. So did Tarnley.”

“Elijah and I are coming over.” The call ends, so I drop my phone back onto the counter, my mind whirring with all the horrific ways this could play out.

I’ve seen the council’s brand of ‘justice’. And that wasonlythe Witch Council, who—as reputation states—are the least bloodthirsty of all the bastards.
