I rush toward Rainey. “What the hell are you guys doing here?” she demands.

“What does it look like?” I ask as I kneel behind her to start undoing the wire wrapped around her wrists. I try to ignore the way it’s biting into her skin, the lacerations bleeding profusely. Isn’t she supposed to be able to heal herself? “We’re saving your ass. This is going to hurt.”

“Not worse than what they already did,” she says, voice hollow.

Unable to keep myself from wincing, I pull the wire from the flesh of her wrists. Unwrapping it as slowly as possible while still maintaining some speed to get us out of here, it takes me nearly a minute to get her free from the bindings.

“Thanks.”

I grip her under her arm and help her up, leaning her slight frame against mine.

“Kneecap is shattered,” she explains, gesturing to her leg.

“I’ve got you.”

By the time we’re standing, Felix and Paloma have stashed both bodies in the doorway and relieved them of the weapons they’d had.

Felix hands me a silver blade. “Don’t do shit like that again.”

“Worked, didn’t it?”

“And if it hadn’t?” he snaps, face red.

“I have you to back me up,” I say with a smile. His mouth quirks up and he shakes his head before turning to Rainey and offering her the second firearm he brought with him.

“Thanks. I guess this makes you guys our rescue party, then?”

He nods. “We’re the only ones who wouldn’t trip up the wards.”

“Nice thinking.”

“Eira tried to get in, but they have it warded specifically against her.”

Rainey growls. “Of course, they do.”

“Why aren’t you healing?” I ask. “Bronywyn said hunters heal fast.”

She holds up her wrist and shows me a raised bump. “They’ve embedded silver beneath our skin. It keeps our abilities mute.”

“Do you know where the others are being held?” Paloma asks, and Rainey nods.

“Back that way, there’s a thin staircase that leads down to the cells.”

“How many guards?”

“None. With the silver, they didn’t put any on us.”

“Want me to cut it out?” I ask.

She eyes me warily.

“I was in veterinary school before my parents needed help with their business.”

“I’m not a dog.”

“No, but the basic concept is the same.”

“Fine.”
