“Iwant to know exactly where he might have gone.”

Paloma stares blankly at me. “I have no clue. Ridley already checked our home, my office; he’s gone.”

“There has to be somewhere.”

“With the fae helping them, they could be anywhere in the world,” Fearghas reminds me.

“No.” I shake my head. “My gut is telling me they are local.”

“Your gut can’t actually tell you a damned thing,” Ridley snaps. “That’s nothing more than hopeful thinking.”

“I’d much rather be hopeful than pessimistic!” I shoot back, temper snapping. Violet magic sparks at my fingertips. Taking a deep breath, I close my eyes and do my best to steady my anger. It’s not his fault. None of this is his fault.

“She’s going to kill you if you keep it up,” Fearghas warns Ridley.

“Someone here has to keep realistic expectations.” He pushes away from the wall and begins to pace, anger weighing down every single one of his steps. “Likely, they’re already dead and we’re wasting time instead of doing what we should be doing, which is fucking running.” He storms out and slams the door.

Fearghas glares after him for a moment, almost as though he’s expecting the fae to rush back in and add on to his parting statement. The desire to run is one that almost everyone else here shares, at least if the murmurs have been any indication.

They’re terrified of what the council is capable of. Not that I blame them, but I’ll die before I leave Tarnley and Rainey at their mercy. He’s alive. I know he is because the bond hasn’t broken yet, and as long as I can still sense our connection, I will fight.

The moment it breaks? I’ll run straight into that council building wearing fucking dynamite and bring the place down on top of me.

“If you have any idea of where he could be…”

“You already checked pack lands?” she questions.

“Ridley did.”

“Then as far as local, that’s all I’ve got.”

“You have an idea of where he could be that’s not local?”

Paloma shakes her head at Fearghas’s question. “As you can tell, I clearly didn’t know everything about him.” Her words are hollow, her tone agonizing. She’s hurting, and while I normally would be sympathetic, my two missing team members have shortened my already small fuse.

Delaney strolls in, eyes red from crying. I feel for her, to be already emotional, and then have to suffer the loss of family? Brutal cards to be dealt, that’s for sure. “Anything?” she asks.

“Not yet. Ridley has checked everywhere Paloma suggested and did a check of pack lands. We have no clue where they are.”

“She must not be local. Your father know of anywhere else?”

“He gave us everything in those envelopes.”

“So we have nothing. No leads, no ideas—nothing.” She sniffles. “Perfect. Shall we go hunt Odette now? Make her tell us?”

“Looks like that might be our only plan.” I sigh and run both hands over my face. “An all-out storming of the council building is out of the question, though. We need to have the element of surprise, and we don’t have enough fae to drop us all in at once.”

“What are you suggesting?”

“That Ridley takes my father, Elijah, Eira, Fearghas, Natalia, and me inside.”

“I’m going in.” Paloma stands.

“Absolutely not. No offense, Captain, but we can’t trust you.”

She glares at Fearghas. “I can reason with him. Make him see what he’s doing is wrong.”
