Bronywyn

Silver slides against leather as I finish holstering a blade to my thigh then face my friends who have just armed themselves to the teeth. Fearghas, boasting two silver blades and a gun at his hip, stands beside Ridley, who’s armed with nothing but a single short sword. Eira stands beside him, dressed in dark jeans and a black jacket—the most casual I’ve ever seen her. Granted, four-inch heels and a skintight dress do not make for a very good range of motion in a fight.

Rachel, holding her medical bag in one hand, a firearm in the other, stands beside Elijah, who’s carrying a pistol boasting silver bullets. Walker, Paloma, and Willa remain close to the door, all three looking completely grim.

“You sure you haven’t seen how this plays out?” I ask the psychic.

His jaw clenches. “I really wish I had.”

A hand clasps my shoulder as my father comes to a stop beside me. “We don’t know what they might have in store for us,” he warns. “That’s if they’re even there at all.”

“You don’t believe they will be?” Willa asks.

“To be honest, I’m not sure. Typically, they steer toward the cautious, but Odette seems to be well past any kind of rational thought at this point. Having humans attacked in the streets? That’s sure as hell not cautious.”

Dark circles line both of his eyes, and I can’t help but notice the way he hunches his shoulders as if his abdomen is still not feeling a hundred percent.

“Are you sure you’re feeling up to this?”

“Absolutely.” He smiles. “Vampire blood is a cure-all.”

“For most of us, anyway,” Walker interjects. “But keep on rubbing it in, you bastards.”

The nervous chuckles of everyone but Paloma fill the room. Since I warned her about her husband’s upcoming meeting with the reaper, she hasn’t spoken a single word.

But I can’t think about that now. Not when my own heart is pounding so hard I’m sure it’s going to shatter my ribcage. I turn to Elijah. “You ready?”

“Fuck yes.”

Pulling out my phone, I tap Delaney’s contact info, and she answers on the first ring. “I was just getting ready to call you.”

“Are you guys in place?”

“We are. The building looks quiet from the outside, but there’s something in there, Bronywyn. Something that’s putting off a whole hell of a lot of magic.”

“Likely the new wards,” I assure her.

“Regardless, watch your back.”

“Thanks.” After ending the call, I shove the cell back into my pocket and take a deep breath. “Delaney is sensing a shit ton of magic rolling off that building,” I tell everyone.

“Shit, with wards like that, we may not even be able to get inside,” My father groans.

“Then we go with plan b,” I tell him.

“Which is?”

“An all-out assault on the building. All or nothing. Winner takes all.” Rolling my shoulders, I step toward Ridley. “You ready?”

He glances over at Sarah, who offers him a nod. “We go first,” he tells her. “Wait a few seconds, and if we don’t come back, you follow.”

“Yes, Commander.” She drops her head in a nod.

“Commander, huh?” I ask him.

“Don’t fucking start in on me now.” He reaches over and grips my hand. My father’s hand remains on my shoulder as Walker grabs onto Ridley’s other arm. Willa steps forward and grabs his hand.

Walker pales at the contact but says nothing.Weird.
