“Just now. Rachel woke up, then took off.”

With shaking hands, she reaches up and grabs the white tips of her once dark hair. “Why is my hair white?”

Bronywyn rushes forward.

Rachel takes a step back.

“Not all of it is white,” she says, as she turns to Ridley. “What the hell happened to you two?”

“I went into the Veil, and I brought her out. Like I said I would.” His tone is sharp, his gaze trained on the woman who’s been dead for three days.

“The Veil? What? Will someone tell me what the fuck is going on?” Rachel yells, loudly.

Bronywyn swallows hard and takes another step forward. This time, the doctor does not retreat. “What do you remember?” she asks.

“We were in the council building. I got shot.” She brings both hands to her chest where the bullet wound had been. “Then I woke up in your clinic. Under a sheet.”

“You don’t remember anything in the Veil?” Ridley asks.

She shakes her head. “When I woke up, I thought about you.” She points to Bronywyn. “And now I’m here. How did I get here?”

“You dematerialized,” I tell her.

“Dema—that’s impossible.”

“You were given immortality and the abilities of a fae,” Ridley tells her.

She whirls on him. “What the hell did you make me?”

“I didn’t make you anything.”

“Really?” she screams, as tears run down her cheeks. “I don’t feel like me anymore.”

“You are still you.” He takes a step toward her, and she moves away from him. “Just…a little different.”

“How?”

“What did it cost you?” Bronywyn questions. Ridley turns to her.

He raises a sleeve of his shirt to showcase a filigree tattoo that matches the ones on Rachel’s arms. “I am bound to you, Rachel,” he answers. “For all eternity.”

Her eyes widen, and she gasps, taking a step backward. “What the hell does that even mean? When did I get tattooed?” she squeals, staring down at her arms as though they belong to someone else.

“I’m not entirely sure.”

“Those are wards,” Bronywyn steps forward and gently touches Ridley’s arm. “Incredible.”

“Wards? Like the ones you put around the house?”

“Similar, but these—”

“Bind our souls,” Ridley replies.

“Wait a fucking minute. I died, you brought me back, and now we’re tied together?”

He nods. “I am at your mercy.”

“This is too much. Oh my gosh…this is too much. I’m going to pass out.” She disappears.
