“I don’t know about that.”

“I’ll go with her,” Paloma offers.

“Paloma, you need to stay out of this.” At her husband’s argument, the police captain shakes her head.

“This is as much a human fight as a supernatural one. They’ve been coming after my kind, Harrie. Hunting us in the streets. Besides, I managed to help breach that building you all are saying is unbreachable right now.”

His lips flatten in a tight line, but he doesn’t argue anymore.

“I’ll take one, as well,” my father argues. “Though I want first pick on the list.”

Rainey chuckles. “You got it. It’s your list, after all. Do we have anyone else we trust?”

“We’re still short three teams,” Nat observes.

“I have some wolves we can bring in on it,” Willa offers.

“You trust them?” Rainey asks.

“With my life.”

“Do it.”

Willa turns to Z. “Grab Ashlyn, Onyx, and Bracken.”

“On it.” He leaves the room quickly, letting the door slam behind him.

My father clears his throat and crosses both arms. “Our locations need to be kept with the team leader,” he says. “No one else needs to know where they’re going until they get there.”

“You know,” Paloma says.

“But I know I’m trustworthy, and while I recognize that none of you know me very well, I do tend to have good instincts.”

“Then you would be the only one with the knowledge of where we are, right?”

“Yes,” he tells Elijah.

“And you don’t see how that’s troublesome?”

“I do,” he replies. “But the more people who know the locations, the more likely it is that those locations will be compromised.”

“And those locations can’t be compromised by you?”

His cheeks redden. “I’m not going to betray you, hunter.”

“I don’t trust anyone, warlock. Especially not someone who has made a habit out of lying—and being damn good at it.”

I consider his suggestion. If we do, in fact, have a traitor, that person not knowing all the team locations would be beneficial. But, if my father does turn out to be that person, none of us knowing where the other is could be a massive weakness should things go sideways.

And just like that, I find myself at a crossroads.

Do I trust the man who spent my entire life lying?

I glance up at Tarnley, not at all surprised to see him watching me. Without looking away, he squeezes my hand and says, “I think we should keep it on a need-to-know basis. Rainey should be given all the locations, as should Delaney, since she is remaining behind. Everyone else can manage their own location, but the team members do not need to know.” He turns to my father. “Then, someone other than Clarance knows as well, but the information is only with the Astors.”

“Then Bronywyn needs to know, too,” Rainey says.

“No. I don’t want to know.” My reply is instant. Should I be captured, I don’t want to risk outing my friends. “Youngest Astors only.” I smile at her, hoping she didn’t take offense to my refusal.
