“Then, if I have all this power inside of me, why the hell can’t I access it?” Delaney asks, left hand pressed firmly to her belly.

Honestly, she’d taken the news a hell of a lot better than I think I would have given the whole “magic taking it upon itself to give her unborn baby a power-up” thing. She’d only asked the basic questions at first. That is until Walker made his way back down, and Fearghas showed his face for a caffeine boost.

“Look,” Walker starts. “I See things that make absolutely no sense most of the time. This vision was clear, but it’s not like I have an instructional manual for babies infected with ley line magic.”

“You say infected as though it’s a terrible thing,” Rainey comments. She stands, arms crossed, beside Elijah, both of them looking uncomfortable with the turn of events.

A feeling the rest of us share. Infants are only born with a fraction of the power they will possess as adults because, just like their bodies grow, so does their magic—right alongside their ability to control it. A child with unchecked power could be disastrous.

“What I don’t understand is how it got there in the first place.”

Fearghas lets out a sigh. “My guess is it happened when we went looking for it. Did you feel anything strange?”

“That’s what I think, too,” Walker adds.

Delaney shakes her head. “There was just nothing there.” She turns to Eira. “Can you read the baby?”

“Wait a fucking minute—” Cole starts, stopping when Delaney throws up a hand.

“We need to know what this means, and if she can get a read off of our baby the same way she got a read off of me back when I took the power in, then maybe we can get some answers. Or, at least, find out if this is going to be a problem later on.”

“What do you mean get a read off of it?” Rachel, the only human currently in our presence, asks.

“As you know, Eira is a siren,” Fearghas starts.

“My magic is pure because water is pure. Because of this, I can sense whether something is light or dark.”

“How?”

“By practically drowning her,” Cole snaps. “At least that’s what happened last time.”

“That is unsafe for you. The stress it could put on the baby…” Rachel’s argument falls on deaf ears, though, as Delaney shakes her head.

“I need to know, Cole. Eira, you’ll stop if it gets too dangerous?”

The siren looks incredibly uncomfortable with Delaney’s request, but she takes a deep breath. “Someone can monitor the baby’s heart rate and let me know if anything changes. I’ll stop if it does.”

Delaney looks to Cole.

He bites down on the inside of his cheek. “Do we really need to know? If this is another problem—if it’s going to be another battle—how the hell is that going to help us?”

“This power is good,” Fearghas presses. “It wouldn’t have been given to your baby if there wasn’t a reason.”

“I want to make sure.” Delaney’s eyes fill. “Because if everything is okay, if this magic has not been corrupted and it is actually the ley line magic, then I can relax and be happy.”

“And if it’s not?” Cole questions. “Will that change anything?”

“If it’s not, then we’ll face it like we’ve faced everything else.”

He shakes his head and turns away from us for a moment. I firmly believe in the neutral magic of the ley lines. But I get where Delaney is coming from. If this is somehow an attack from the council, a way to get to her baby and to us, then we need to know.

Though I don’t agree this risk is worth that knowledge. “Delaney, we can find another way.”

She whirls on me. “I’m sure we can, but we don’t have time. In two hours, we’re all going our separate ways. Don’t you all want to know if there is something to worry about before then?”

“She’s got a point,” Rainey mutters.
