“I don’t ever want to be the reason you don’t get what you want.”

Reaching up, I cup his face with both hands. “You are what I want, Tarnley. One hundred percent. I’m sorry that I made you feel as though you weren’t enough.”

He covers my hands with his. “If that ever changes, tell me.”

“It won’t,” I assure him. “But I promise that I will.”

He kisses me gently and is just pulling away when a car appears over the hill of the driveway. My father’s black Mustang is unmistakable, and the sight of the muscle car has my stomach churning with the knowledge that our sweet moments have ended and the war has begun.

We make our way down the steps, reaching the bottom as my father is climbing out of his car, a stack of envelopes in hand.

His gaze immediately drops to the ring on my left hand, and he smiles proudly. “I take it congratulations are in order?”

I smile, face flushing with heat.

“Congratulations, Bronywyn. I am truly grateful you are happy.”

“Thank you.”

He reaches out with a hand and offers it to Tarnley, who returns the gesture. “Take care of my daughter.”

“I will.”

The door opens behind us, and the two men release each other as Rainey, Delaney, Cole, Fearghas, Eira, and Elijah make their way outside. Walker comes out behind them, right alongside Rachel, Deissy, and Felix.

From the crowd before us, Willa, Z, Drexel, and Magnolia emerge, along with Brad and Bella. The rest of the supernaturals remain in their ranks, each group lined up behind the fae Ridley assigned. He appears beside my father, who barely seems to recognize the fae’s arrival.

“I have the envelopes with the locations. They are completely randomized; Rainey and I did not label them, and each one is exactly the same. It’s the closest I could get to not knowing the locations, either,” he says with a wink as he hands them to Rainey. “Feel free to assign them to whomever you choose.” He pulls one out of his jacket. “Though, this one is mine.”

She nods and shuffles them then opens the first one. “Bronywyn.” She hands it to me and moves to the next. “Tarnley.” He takes the envelope and moves back beside me to take my hand, squeezing gently. I know he feels my nerves, my anxiousness, so I do my best to swallow it down.

Being worried will do none of us any good. The fact remains that we are here, and this is what needs to be done.

“Fearghas,” she says, handing him the third envelope.

One by one, Rainey hands them out until finally, there’s only one left. “I guess this one will be mine.” She takes a deep breath. “You got everyone assigned?” she asks Ridley, who nods in return.

“Everyone has a fae escort, and the teams who are sharing a taxi service know what to do.”

“Great.” She takes a deep breath. “I guess this is it, then.”

“Go on, give everyone a power speech,” Delaney tells her. Rainey visibly pales.

“No fucking thank you. You guys have been riding my leadership coattails this entire time. I think Bronywyn should do it.”

My stomach churns. “Why me?”

She shrugs. “Your dark side started this. Seems only fitting your good side leads us into battle.”

I gape at her. She may not be one hundred percent wrong about Odette coming here as a direct result of my intake of dark magic, but—shit—I don’t want to be in charge.

“Go on, Bronywyn. You read, right?”

“What the hell does my book status have to do with this?”

“They always give big speeches before a crazy ass fight, right?”

“I read romance,” I shoot back.
