Chapter Eleven

All went as Rose hadplanned. She and Matthew had enjoyed a tryst hiding in some of the small dunes and tall grasses. Both agreed there was entirely too much sand.

“How did she do it, Matthew?”she asked as they walked with her hand draped on his arm, heading toward the horses.

“I’ll probably need a name.”

“Madame DuPuis. How did she find someone for me that met the criteria I set out?How many suitable men are there in London, let alone one who might walk into her establishment just when needed? And so quickly.”

“Fate.Cosmic influence.”

“Destiny isn’t a very romantic notion.”

“Is that what you want?Romance?”

“Does any noble in London marry for such a sentimental reason? My dear Matthew, even you must know it is about dynasty, money and power.”

“My mother claims to love the earl.”

“Your mother! Is her name really Jezebel?”

“She was called Jezzy the entirety of my life, so I never thought a thing about it until the earl teased her after their marriage. It meansimpure. She laughed when the earl pointed that out to her.”

“And what about your father?Did he have a name for your mother, too?”

“My father?Well, he wasn’t with us so often.I don’t remember much about him.”

They arrived at the horses and Matthew lifted her to the side saddle, handing her the reins.“Shall we race?”she asked.

“No.I’m enjoying the leisurely pace of life at Sturry Park.I can gallop when I’m back in London,” he said.

“Or when we are back in London, I can convince you not to gallop so often.”

Matthew climbed in the saddle, the leather creaking. They reined the horses in the direction of Sturry Park, but the animals seemed to have a nose for their warm stalls and generous oats.“Rose, I think we should announce our happy news after the Crestview Ball.We can start with Lady Chester, since she is your particular friend.”

“You and I are naked together almost daily, yet I feel very uncomfortable talking to you about this.”
