“Oh?It must be good.”

“Promise not to squeal.”Abigail nodded.“I’m with child!”Rose whispered.A sense of relief washed over her.She had been aching to tell her friend.

Abigail’s expression froze in a silent scream.“Oh, that is so wonderful. When?”

“Late spring.Early summer. You know how temperamental babies can be.”

“Then you won’t miss much of the Season.”

A strange wail started somewhere in the house. The cry was in the background, but it hadn’t disturbed anyone yet.She knew the house sounds now and the noise wasn’t part of the normal creaking and moaning of wood beams and rafters.“Excuse me, Abigail.Feel free to spread the news.”

“Oh, I will.”

Rose hurried to the foyer and up the stairs, where the sound was more pronounced, more agonizing. Was a guest in pain? Was she so shallow that she couldn’t bear to have her party ruined over a twisted ankle or torn seam? The sound was coming from Matthew’s room. All the more alarming!

Was that why Matthew had hurried from the ballroom?
