My phone vibrating in my pocket brings me out of my thoughts. I put my bags in one hand and fish it out. The number is not in my contacts, but I answer anyway. It’s just a phone call, and I have security all around me.
"Hello?"
The person on the other end doesn't say anything, but I can hear them breathing like a weirdo. Like creepy, heavy breathing.
I pull the phone from my ear and look at the number again, trying to see if I know it.
"Who is this?" I say when I put it back to my ear.
Brian stops and puts a hand to my shoulder and mouths,give it to me.
I do as he said, and he puts it on speaker while casting his eyes around us.
"Do you know who you're fucking with?" Brian growls as he ushers Letty and me into a toy store and straight to a corner, away from the windows. I can still hear the breathing as he walks back over to the door and lets out a whistle to someone. Probably one of the other guards with us.
Through the phone, a gravelly voice comes through, "La muerte ha venido a cobrar, amigo."Death has come to collect, my friend."Ve con Dios."Go with God.
Then the line goes dead.
Oh fuck.
I start hyperventilating as five guards come into the store. Letty wraps her arms around me and turns my back to the men, "Escuchame, Dice."Listen to me, Dice. "When that motherfucker killed my guard, I wanted to scream. I wanted to run away and hide, but I didn't. I reminded myself that the weak fall but the strong get back up. Are you weak, Dice?"
On a shaky breath, I reply, "Fuck no. Just freaked. What the hell do we do?"
Instead of Letty replying, Brian pulls me to his side, "We're going to go out through the back. There's a hallway behind every store for deliveries. We're going to go quickly, men in the front and men in the back. We got you girls, okay? If I tell you to get down, you get down. If I say run, you better run in those fucking heels, yeah?"
I nod my head along with Letty, but my body feels like I’ve turned into a fucking jellyfish. I've been so content these past couple of weeks of silence. Danny Reyes has been silent on all fronts, and Leo has made me feel safe. I was caught off guard with this shit.
I will never be able to rest well until that cocksucker is in the ground.
