Ronnie shot up from her chair and swept her arm across Gregor’s desk, knocking his lamp and picture frames to the ground. “No! I will not loose control of my bar. I won’t. You’re gonna undo it. Adrian will make you undo it if he has to. She does not get control overmybar.”

“It’s already done.” Gregor sighed. “Destroying my office, or having Adrian compel me won’t change that.”

She slapped her hands down on the edge of his desk, and her nails elongated into claws. “She’s not even blood. She’s not even Annie’s granddaughter. She shouldn’t even be in the will. You have to fix this.”

“What?” I squinted at her. “What did you just say?”

Ronnie whipped around. Her hand shot out grabbing me by the neck, and her weight propelled me backward until my shoulders slammed into the floorboards and she crouched over me snarling.

“You are not my daughter, you insolent little shit. You never were. You’re the rancid seed of a one-night stand, and your asshole of a father made me claim you, but YOU ARE NOT MINE.”

A gun went off from somewhere in the distance, and Ronnie leapt away from me. “Gregor, are you nuts?”

“You may be the wife of my Alpha, but I will not stand for violence on my territory,” he said.

She let out a loud growl and then she was gone, racing out of the office. I closed my eyes, lying still on the carpet for a second. “It’s true, isn’t it?”

I heard footsteps come closer and when I opened my eyes, Gregor sighed. “I’m afraid so.”

He offered me his hand and helped me to my feet. I looked around and felt my lip curl at the sight of my coffee splattered across the floor.

“My coffee.” I pouted. “Sorry about your carpet.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ve got cleaners that will take that right out. A hazard of working for the pack,” he said. “Now, I have one more thing for you.”

“What’s that, another revelation about my life? Am I actually a vampire?” I snorted, running my hands over my face.

“Not quite, but I can say at least, that this is the last one I have to give you,” he said, taking a picture off the wall. Behind it sat a black safe. “Your father wrote this letter when he filed your birth certificate with the city. You were five years old.”

“So, I didn’t come out of the wicked wolf of the west. That’s a relief at least,” I said, but despite my words tears still dripped over my cheeks.

“Here,” Gregor said.

I blinked and he was holding out an envelope to me. I took it and swallowed around a sudden lump in my throat. My name was scrawled across the front in an all too familiar handwriting.

“What does it say?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know.”

“Thanks.” I sighed.

“I’d give you my office to read it, but I’m going to need to get Sasha in here while I go talk to Adrian, and head off whatever trouble is about to come my way,” he said.

“Not a problem. Just tell me where I sign, and I’ll be out of your hair,” I said.

“It’s on the desk.” He pointed. “Right by the X. Then take the manila packet. It’s got all your copies of the paperwork, everything that explains what Annie left you, the notes on your account. Everything.”

I gave him a mock salute and leaned over the table, snatching a pen from the cup. I scribbled my name and snatched up the packet.

“Thanks again, and I’m sorry,” I said, pausing at the door. “If there’s anything else you need from me, please just let me know. It looks like I’ll be sticking around for a while.”
