I cleared my throat. “That sounds good.”

“Follow me,” he said, shooting to his feet.

He turned away, and before I could say another word, he was out the door ahead of me. Blinking at his retreating form, I hoisted myself up out of his chair and hobbled after him.

By the time I caught up he was passing the table in what I suspected was his kitchen. I made to follow, but a scent caught my attention as I passed the French doors. Turning, I pushed one inward, and I spotted the source sitting on the end of a large king-sized bed.

It was a laundry basket, but the contents didn’t belong to him. They smelled like Annie. Grabbing one of the sweaters from the top of it, I unfolded it and my jaw dropped. Someone had sewed it back together.

“I was going to show you once I’d finished fixing them,” Jamie said, stepping into the room behind me.

“You fixed her sweaters?” I said, holding it to my nose. His scent had caught on the threads, but the rest of it still smelled like Annie. Tears gathered at the corners of my eyes.

“If I over stepped, I’m sorry. I just…I know what it’s like to loose someone. I didn’t want you to pay for Ronnie’s actions,” he said.

Setting the sweatshirt down, I turned around and marched toward him. Jamie tensed, readying for me to hit him, but instead I slipped my arms around his waist, and hugged him tight.

“Thank you,” I whispered, through my tears.

His hands hovered around me for a second and then he wrapped one arm around my shoulders and let the other hand rest on the back of my head, cradling me against his chest.

“Anytime.”

We stood there for a minute in perfect harmony. I closed my eyes and just listened to the steady beat of his heart. Once my tears stopped, I looked up at him smiling weakly.

“So,” I said. “We’ve got two problems.”

“Okay?” His eyebrows drew together.

I squared my shoulders, wiped the drying tears from my cheeks. “First, we need to figure out what those things in the forest are. Not just for Adrian’s sake, but for the pack’s sake.”

“I agree.” He nodded.

“Second, I need to find proof that Adrian killed Annie. I’m pretty sure we both want to fix the first problem, but I’ll understand if you’d rather not help me with the second. He’s your Alpha, and I know you work closely with him…I just…”

“I’ll help you find Annie’s killer,” he said. “Even if it was Adrian.”

I studied his face looking for a lie lurking beneath the surface of his expression, or a joke waiting to be told, but there was nothing. His jaw was set, and his eyes were clear.

“Good.” I nodded. “Then I have something to show you.”

“What?”

“Follow me,” I said, stepping around him.

He caught me by the wrist. “Eve, I…We’ll catch him. I promise.”

I blinked against another wave of tears. “You know you’re the only person who’s ever called me, Eve.”

He shrugged. “You don’t get mad at me when I call you Eve.”

“It’s a hell of a lot better than Snowball,” I said, narrowing my eyes.

“What, you don’t like nicknames?”

I pursed my lips. “I prefer Snow. That at least doesn’t make me sound like a dog.”

He laughed. “Alright. Snow it is.”
