The road to Estelle Falls was quiet. There weren’t many lights, and it wound through the trees like it belonged in a Thomas Kinkade painting.

As he drove his black SUV, Jamie reached across the space between us, and squeezed my knee. “You didn’t get much sleep last night. Why don’t you lay back? I’ll wake you up when we get there.”

“You slept even less than I did,” I said.

“True.” He laughed. “But one of us has to drive.”

I nodded, laying my head back against the seat. My eyes naturally drifted closed and I took a purposeful breath. “I’d rather be back in bed with you.”

Jamie laughed. “Me too, Snow. Me too.”

“Well,” I said, smiling wickedly at him. “The sooner we get this done, kill this witch. The sooner you and I can spend a week under the covers together.”

He arched an eyebrow, smiling, his eyes still firmly on the road. “Just a week?”

I shrugged. “It’s a start. I figure we’ll need to get food at some point, rehydrate.”

“Well,” he chuckled. “That certainly sounds like a good way to spend my days.”

“Your nights too,” I teased, hitting the button to lay my seat back. He was right. I was tired, but at the same time my entire body was coursing with energy. I was going on a witch hunt. I was searching for the boogey man Annie used to tell me stories about. The one that Annie promised could and would kill me if it got the chance.

“Hey,” Jamie called softly.

“Hmm?”

“Where’d you go?” He asked. “You were laughing and then you just stopped. You look scared.”

“I’m fine. Just thinking about Annie, that’s all.”

He hummed in thought and turned back to the road. “You can talk to me, you know?”

“I know.” I nodded, curling up on the seat. “Just feeling my feelings, that’s all. Annie used to tell me horror stories about the witches she’d faced down. Gave me nightmares a few times.”

“What kind of stories?”

I shook my head. “Just imagine how Little Red Riding Hood would’ve gone if she could use magic?”

“Yikes.” He shuddered. “Well, then rest up. We’ll be in…what was it again?” He tapped the GPS. “Estelle Falls. We should be in Estelle Falls in about forty-five minutes.”

I smiled, snuggling into the seat, and just as I closed my eyes, he laid his jacket over me. I hid my smile under the collar. “Thank you, but won’t this smell like me now?”

Jamie snorted. “Aside from the fact Ilikehow you smell; our scents merged the moment we bonded. Everything I own is gonna smell like you sooner or later.”

I narrowed my eyes at him, studying his profile as he drove. “What do I smell like to you?”

“What do I smell like to you?” He teased, glancing sideways at me.

“A thunderstorm,” I said, closing my eyes. “Like rain rolling through the Cape on a cool summer day.”

“I do like the water,” he said.

I laughed, snuggling into his jacket. “So…”

“So, what?” he asked.

“So…what do I smell like?” I chuckled.
