“Don’t you dare,” I snarled, slamming my hands against his chest. “Don’t you dare say those words. You betrayed me. How could you?”

“I didn’t do this,” he repeated, trying to regain his footing. “You know I didn’t.”

“I never should’ve trusted you. You were always a liar, an asshole. I never should’ve trusted you with anything,” I said, shoving him again. “Get out.”

“Eve, please.” His eyes shone with tears, and frustration.

“Get out,” I snarled, clenching my hands into fists. “Just get out. I never want to see you again.”

Jamie winced like I’d slapped him. “Please don’t say that. Please don’t push me away. I didn’t do this. You have to believe me.”

I threw up my hands in exasperation. “Well, I don’t.”

His hands flexed at his sides, and he took a long stride forward grabbing my face between his palms. Our mouths clashed together hard as he kissed me. I clawed at his face and shoved him away from me. “Get off.”

“Eve.” He backed up half a step, turning his face away, and I slapped him hard.

“Get out,” I said, my voice dropping low as the fight started ebbing out of me. I’d had my heart broken in the past, but it was nothing compared to this kind of pain. To hate him and love him and need him and be sickened by the sight of him all at the same time. My insides throbbed.

Jamie met my eyes, tears running down his cheeks. He backed up to the ladder, and then climbed out without another word. I stood in place, listening to his footsteps retreating through the house, and once I was sure he was gone, I shattered across the floor.
