“We’ve done nothing wrong,” Jamie said. “We couldn’t control the bond, and she hates me, but Eve isn’t a rogue wolf. I saw the proof myself. You lied about how Annie died. You’re lying about this. Those witches just tried to kill us while we were looking for answers, looking for help against the curse. Eve’s been trying to fix it all.”

“You’ve broken pack law,” Adrian said, stepping closer to him. “Subdue him, son. It seems we have two wolves to punish. We’ll convene tomorrow at the altar, and justice will be served.”

Jamie’s eyes flashed with anger again and he started to pull at my brother’s hands as they took a hold of his arms. He glanced at me, and I looked away, studying the fire. There was no denying we were mates. Our scents had mingled, we’d been around each other enough, and his fury was only further proof, but it didn’t change anything. He’d betrayed me. They’d all betrayed me. Adrian had won.

“Dillon,” the alpha said. “Throw her in one of the cages. Zach, bring him into my office, it seems we have much to discuss.”

“May I join you?” Claudette asked, with two witches flanking at her shoulders. “My girls will continue their healing, but I am infinitely curious about mating bonds.”

Adrian gave her a respectful nod. “Of course.”

“Can you walk?”

It took me a second before I realized the question had come from Dillon and it was directed at me. I nodded and began shuffling back to the stairs. How had everything fallen so far apart? I’d good and truly lost everything. My father, my grandmother, whatever key existed to my birthmother, and the mate I’d be stuck with for the rest of my life was a liar. I couldn’t wrap my head around it.

Dillon led me through the door, and to the left to the kitchen, to the small door that led down into the basement of the Alpha house, my body felt weak. I was exhausted.

I didn’t even fight as he unlatched my cuffs and chained me to the wall. I just sat there on the bed. He stepped back and frowned at me. “Why did you do it, Eve? I thought we were friends. I mean I get wanting Adrian gone, he took your father’s place, but why did you want usalldead?”

I looked up at him. “I didn’t.”

His lips pursed. “There’s evidence.”

“You choose who you want to believe.” I shrugged. “But the truth is what it is.”

Dillon hung his head. “I wish I could believe you.”

“It doesn’t matter now. Adrian’s won.” Shifting around, I stretched out on the cot, and turned away from him to face the stone wall. I heard the door close, and my body relaxed as much as it could with the silver burning my skin.

What was there left to do, but let reality sink in? The monster that had killed my father was sitting in his place, and I was public enemy number one. At least, I knew I wouldn’t have to live this way for very long. Adrian wanted my head on a silver platter, and now from what I could see all the stars had aligned to give him exactly that.

Falling asleep, that singular thought rang in my head. Tomorrow’s dawn, tomorrow sunset, no matter when I woke, or if I saw them, they would be my last.
