“Start your own pack? That’s…dangerous,” Maria said.

“It can be done, but it’s dangerous,” I said, thinking back to the things Adrian said to me. I was interfering with his pack bond. They weren’t fully his. Not yet.

“I know that look,” Maria said. “What are you thinking?”

I glanced at her, and then turned fully to Jamie. “Where does Adrian think you are?”

“Running along the coast, licking my wounds,” he said.

I nodded. “Okay. You need to change and run back to town. Pretend you’re devastated and angry that I’m gone. Play the good soldier.”

“What?” He shook his head and caught my face between his hands. “No, I know you hate me, but I’m not letting you out of my sight.”

I snorted. “I don’t hate you. I’m sorry for what I said. I thought…I don’t know what I thought.”

He brushed his thumbs over my cheeks. “You thought I was still the idiot you hated in high school. It’s okay. I get it. I’ve got a lot to make up for. I just hope you’ll let me do that.”

Pressing up onto my toes, I kissed him, and murmured against his lips. “You can’t get rid of me that easy.”

“Thank god,” he groaned, sealing my mouth with another kiss. His arms slid down around my back, crushing me against his chest, and I melted, instantly deepening our embrace.

“You two are adorable and all, but shouldn’t we be looking for this talisman?” Maria said, throwing her hands up in the air.

I started to pull away, but Jamie tightened his grasp on me. “If I have to go back into the lion’s den, there’s something I need to say first.”

I put my fingers to his lips. “Save it for once this is over, because I fully intend on surviving this show down.”

“Alright,” he said, kissing the tip of my nose. “I’m gonna hold you to that.”

“Now go. Go back and play your part. I’ll find the talisman and I’ll make my move,” I said, gently extracting myself from his grip. “You should go too, Maria. If either one of you disappears, he’s bound to get suspicious, and that will only make things harder for me.”

“No, I can stay and help you find the talisman,” she protested. “I served my purpose with Adrian. He want’s nothing to do with me anymore.”

I balled my hands into fists at my sides and glanced sideways at her. “I said go.”

A wave of energy rolled off my shoulders through the pack bond that linked the three of us together, and they both took staggering steps away from me.

Maria’s face paled as she looked up at me. “How did you do that?”

Jamie rubbed his hand over the middle of his chest. “That felt like—"

Staring at the tower off in the distance, I felt my lips curl up into a genuine and terrifying smile. “Adrian’s not the only Alpha in the pack.”
