“You don’t know? What kind of spirit guide are you?” I snorted.

Annie glared at me. “Close your eyes, feel it with your witchy woo woo powers, I don’t know.”

I rolled my eyes and stepped into the moonlight. The center of the room felt like a good spot to start. “I’ve been in this room a thousand times. I’ve never seen a necklace before.”

“You’ve neverneededit before,” Annie said.

I let out a long breath and noticed something tingling under my feet. I looked down and the stone at the center of the circular floor was carved with an intricate pentagram. I crouched and knelt over the design. The edges had divots on every line, and I sighed.

“Pentagram marks the spot?” I asked, glancing up at Annie.

She made a face that said she didn’t have a clue. “Is it ever really that easy?”

I nodded, and splayed my fingers, putting one in each of the divots. They fit my fingers perfectly, and as I pushed down attempting to turn it, I felt sharp pricks against the pads of each of my fingers.

I hissed, and the stone turned to the right, as it began to glow with a dull blue light. The tingling I’d felt beneath my feet vibrated through my hand, and trails of blood spread out tracing the lines of the star.

There was a loud pop, and I slipped through the stone as my hand dropped down into a recess in the ground. I caught myself hitting the bottom and my palm flattened over a folded piece of paper.

I pulled back, and I lifted the paper out of the hole. I unfolded it and dropped my head groaning. “Of course. Of course, it’s not here.”

“What do you mean it’s not there?” Annie asked, crouching opposite me.

I tilted the paper into the light a little more and read it out loud. “You stole my husband’s heart, you stuck me with your bastard child. Now, I’ve taken something from you. She’ll never have your talisman. Not if it’s the last thing I do.”

“Veronica?” Annie’s eyebrows shot skyward. “How would she know about this place?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “But once I handle Adrian. I think Step Mumsie and I are going to have a little chat.”
