“Yes, ma’am. I’ll see you later.”

“All right,” I say, looking at him. I glance at his lips – didn’t mean to. He’s just sitting so close to me and judging by the way he’s looking, I feel like he’s going to make an attempt to kiss me. To get him out of the car, I say, “See ya later.”

He reaches for the door and finally exits, once again leaving his cologne behind in my car. I’m not sure what I’ve gotten myself into with Essex, but he’s making it clear that he doesn’t mind being in my presence. And—

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Startled, my butt loses contact with the seat when I hear knuckles tapping on my window. I quickly glance to the left to see Essex motioning for me to roll the window down. I press the button to lower it and say, “Jesus! What are you trying to do? Give me a heart attack!”

“Sorry, I thought you saw me.”

“No, I didn’t see you. I was—”

“You were in deep thought,” he says, finishing my sentence. “What’s on your mind?”

“Nothing,” I tell him. What was I supposed to say? I was sitting here thinking about you. About how the very scent of you excites me. How I have high hopes that you’ll become the opposite of who you are now. That you’d change. I can’t tell him that, now can I?

Since he’s still standing at my window like he doesn’t want to leave, I ask, “Did you need something?”

“Yes. I need to take a piece of you back to my office so I can make it through the rest of the day.”

“And how do you suppose you’re going to do that?”

He dips his head down and presses his lips to my cheek. “That’s how,” he tells me with his lips brushing against my ear. “Bye.”

I touch my face. This time, I make sure he’s gone before I let my guard down. I suppose I should be flattered, but how can I be when I’m not certain why this man – who doesn’t really like anyone – has chosen me to be theoneperson at DePaul & Company who he’s cordial with?

I’m not sure what to make of it just yet.
