“Then what is it?”
“It’s a…um…a slight detour from reality.” She giggles.
“I don’t see the humor in any of this, Tessie. I’ve been waiting years to make you my wife. I finally get the chance and we have to resort to halfwitted games—sneaking around like I’m not yours and you’re not mine? I don’t like this at all.”
“It’s only temporary, Essex.”
“You mean it’s only until you’re no longer ashamed to admit that we’re together?”
“I’m not ashamed—”
“Then what are you?” I ask, challenging her. “What areweif we must hide the way we feel for each other? We’re not in high school anymore.”
“Essex—”
“Are we?”
“No, we’re not, but—”
“No buts. I’ve listened to your position. It doesn’t make sense. When are you going to listen to mine?”
“You know what…I’m going to go get a glass of champagne and give you a minute to cool off. When you can talk to me without raising your voice, I’ll be open to listen.”
She walks away, leaving me more frustrated than I was originally – when she’d arrived late. I turn around and watch her walk over to her ‘crew’. The Valentine girl glances at her, then looks back at me. It may be sooner rather than later that they find out about us and I’m down for it.
