I raise a defiant brow. “That’s what you think. Now, do we have a deal?”

The corners of his eyes crease as he contemplates a tamed smile, but it doesn’t even look like a smile’s distant cousin. “Fine.”

I extend my hand to him, wanting to shake on it. He reaches for my hand and pulls me into his personal space, wrapping his arms tight around me. The warmth, the tingles that overtake my body has me shuddering next to him. I’m sure he feels it.

“I’ll be waiting for your text,” he says, releasing me, pressing his lips to my forehead.

It feels like he’s branded the shape of his lips there.

Oh, the feeling…

He’s electrified me. Shocked me. He’s awakened parts of my body that I didn’t know I had.

“Thanks for dinner,” he says, taking his jacket from the armrest of the sofa.

“You’re welcome. I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening and again, I’m sorry about your mother.”

“Thanks.”

I open the door and when he steps out, he says, “Oh, and by the way, I wasn’t apologizing for kissing you. That was intentional.”

And then he’s gone. Do I think he’s serious about wanting to change? I’m not sure what to think at this point. Like before, he seemed legit, but Essex is a man of layers and he’s a master at keeping them hidden behind high-priced suits and an insolent persona. When dealing with him, I must remember there’s an actual man beneath all the crap he dishes out in order to hide hisrealfeelings because while he claims he doesn’t have any, he does – no matter how elusive he is about them.
