“Because I didn’t. He changed. His name changed. Everything about him changed.”

Brows furrowed, she asks, “So, you mean to tell me he doesn’t look the same as he did back then?”

“Not at all.”

“Hmm…I’m not buying it.”

“It’s true, Zee.”

She shakes her head. “You done told him everything we said about him, haven’t you?”

“No. I didn’t.”

“The betrayal…” she says, her eyes narrowed to slits.

Amused, I ask, “How did I betray you?”

“You fell in love with the enemy.”

“I can assure you—I won’t be telling any of your secrets.”

“I can’t believe y’all are together.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t he come over and say something to you just now?”

“Because we’re keeping everything lowkey.”

“Oh, so he doesn’t want anyone to know?”

“No, he doesn’t care. I’m the one who’s reluctant to reveal it to everyone.”

“Why?”

“Well, um…look at how you reacted.”

“So. If y’all in love and whatnot, let it be known.”

“I don’t know. I just think we should keep our personal life separate from our business life.”

She shakes her head. “I’m floored. I’ll never look at you the same.”

I grin. “You’re funny, Zee.”

“I won’t. Let me eat so I can get it together. You done threw me all off for today. I just knew Shanice was swinging them cheap wigs trying to get Mr. DePaul’s attention and it turns out, he’s already spoken for.”

“Yeah, he’s spoken for. He’s all mine.”
