“You look really pretty,” he says when we reach the top.

He’s a decent liar. I am out of breath and panting the same as Annie. Meanwhile, he seems completely unbothered. Next thing I know, his hand is in my hair. He’s kissing me again. I’ve never been kissed like this before, but I’ve imagined it plenty of times.

His lips are soft, but firm, and they move skillfully over mine. I feel his hand slide into my hair, gripping the back of my head to hold me in place. His other hand slides around my waist, pulling me closer. I feel the rough fabric of his flannel against my cheek. The cold air slips through the sweater, chilling my skin. His hands move to my breasts, and his tongue is everywhere, probing and searching.

I do something I’ve never done before; I bite his neck. I don’t know what comes over me.

He jerks backward, pulls away, and touches his fingers to his jugular. He comes away with blood.

“Are you okay?”

He nods. “I thought vampires only came out at night.”

“I guess I’m a rare breed.”

“Not a morning person, I presume,” he says, coming toward me like all is forgiven.

I cock my head. “I’m never better than just before dawn.”

“I couldn't sleep for thinking about you.”

“I think we suffer the same affliction.”

The sun is shining, and I watch as he takes a knee. The ground is frozen, but it is starting to thaw.

Joel reaches up for my hand and grins. “Marry me.”

It’s not a question, and I’ve never realized how much I prefer it that way. I suck my bottom lip between my teeth. “I’ll have to think it over.”

“I’ll give you until after breakfast.”
