“Speaking of people I’d like to murder….” Melanie glares at the man who flops down on the stool next to mine, swiveling it toward me.

“Aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend?” he asks Melanie, while he keeps his eyes on me, with a charming smile on his face.

He’s a pretty good-looking guy, with dark hair, stubble on his face, blue eyes, and dimples in his cheeks.

Melanie lets out a sigh, and I glance over at her to find her still glaring at the guy like she’s about ready to pick up the butter knife in front of me and slit his throat.

“Dickhead, Danny. Danny, dickhead,” Melanie introduces, gesturing back and forth between the two of us, while I try not to laugh.

“Most people just call me Spencer, but Melanie can’t stop thinking about my dick.” Spencer grins, holding his hand out to me while she scoffs.

“Yes, I can’t stop thinking about how tiny and unsatisfying it would be.” She rolls her eyes as I shake Spencer’s hand.

Ryan has mentioned his best friend a few times over the last few weeks. He told me he was a good guy, but Melanie’s reaction to him says otherwise.

“It’s nice to meet you. I think.” I smile at him, looking back at Melanie with one eyebrow raised.

“Oh, it’s definitely not.” She shakes her head with a look of disgust on her face.

“So, you’re Danny.” Spencer continues to smile as I look back at him, not letting go of my hand as he looks me over. It’s not creepy, just curious. After a few seconds, he drops my hand with a chuckle. “Yep, I can definitely see it now. Oh, this is gonna be fun to watch.”

I have no idea what he’s talking about, and before I can ask, Melanie tosses a Styrofoam to-go container down in front of Spencer with aplop.

“Take your breakfast and go, before we get an STD just breathing the same air as you.”

Spencer laughs under his breath, grabbing the container withDickheadscrawled across the top in black Sharpie. Pushing up from his stool and getting to his feet, he rests his free hand on the counter, leaning across it and closer to Melanie.

“Jealous?”

“Of herpes? No.” She rolls her eyes.

Spencer just smirks at her before pushing off the counter with his hand and giving me a nod. “It was a pleasure meeting you, Danny.” He turns his head to look at Melanie. “It’s never a pleasure seeing you.”

“Piss off.” She smiles sweetly at him.

As soon as Spencer walks away and out the door of the diner, Melanie’s smile falls with a sigh.

“What the hell was that?” I laugh.

“That was Ryan’s best friend. I still don’t understand how that friendship occurred or how it continues to thrive,” she mutters as she grabs the coffee pot from the warmer next to her and tops off my mug.

“Good to know, but I already knew who he is. That’s not what I’m referring to. How long have you had a crush on Ryan’s best friend?”

“Are you high?” Melanie laughs, but her cheeks immediately get red as she moves two seats down to top off someone else’s coffee. “I can’t stand him. He’s a manwhore and a jerk. I stupidly agreed to go on a date with him the first week I moved here, and it was a disaster. He spent the whole night flirting with our waitress and eye-fucking the bartender.”

When the man whose coffee she’s refilling starts to choke on his scrambled eggs, she rolls her eyes at him as she moves back down to me.

“Mind your business, Sal,” she mutters, and I do a double-take when I look down at the man, smiling when I realize he’s one of the stars of the Summersweet Island soap opera Ryan and I have been listening to at night on the police scanner.

Melanie puts the coffee pot on the warmer and waves away my question. “Enough about me. We were discussing how you’re going to put the moves on your BDE roommate.”

An incoming text saves me from having to pick back up where we left off with this ridiculous conversation. Scooping up my phone from the counter, I smile as I look down at it.

Tess:I didn’t forget about you, I swear! Everyone’s been crazy-busy, but we’re finally getting together for Sip and Bitch tonight. Meet us up at the Dip and Twist around 7. If you don’t show up, I know where you live now, and I will come over there and drag your ass out of that house. See you tonight!

“Have you ever been to one of these? I don’t know if I should go or not.”

“Oh my God, you got invited to Sip and Bitch at the Dip and Twist?” Melanie asks excitedly as I show her the text. “Youhaveto go and tell me everything! That’s like being invited into the inner circle, or the cool kid’s table at lunch. Those girls don’t invite justanyoneto a sacred Sip and Bitch.”
