Mr. Hutton drops my hand and then sighs. “Unfortunately, I’m going to have to let Sal arrest you, since Asher pressed charges before he left.”

Sal suddenly appears next to Mr. Hutton, holding up a pair of cuffs, with a smile entirely too big on his face.

“Come on, Dad. You seriously can’t pull a few strings and get her out of this?” Ryan complains as I step out from under his arm and toward Sal with my wrists out.

“I wouldn’t respect him if he did,” I tell Ryan.

Mr. Hutton smiles at me, and I smile right back with a nod, as Sal starts to put the cuffs on my wrists in front of me. He thinks better of it and pulls my arms behind my back to arrest me.

“Oh, come on. I’m not going to punchyou.” I shake my head at Sal as Ryan and his dad laugh.

“Privates out in public, blood all over the floor of city hall… I don’t trust you as far as I can throw you,” Sal mutters. “But we can stop and get a hot fudge sundae before I take you in.”

“We’re right behind you, and we’ll have you out in a jiffy. I promise!” Mr. Hutton shouts after me.

“Don’t worry; we’ve got a jar on the counter in the kitchen designated for bail money,” Ryan informs him.

“Of course you do.” Mr. Hutton sighs with a shake of his head.

I blow Ryan a kiss without the use of my hands as Sal walks me toward his police golf cart.

“I love you, you nut job!” Ryan shouts after me.

“You better, nerd! I’m doing time for you!”

“Make sure you smile pretty in your mug shot. We’ll use our matching ones in my Christmas newsletter this year!” He gives me a thumbs-up, and his dad just shakes his head again, grabbing Ryan’s arm and pulling him up onto the curb in the opposite direction.

I happily let Sal take me to jail, knowing when I’m done I’ll get to go back home to a man I’m positive will take care of my heart this time.

And not just because he might be a little bit afraid of my right hook. But because a nerd fell in love with a nut job, and that’s some Summersweet Island, magical fairy-tale shit you just don’t mess with.
