“Odd and even.”

“Yup.”

“Just like us.”

“That’s the plan.” My voice is gravelly now. I’ll have to work hard not to let all the emotion spill out of my eyes.

“I’m not sure I understand,” she says. “Are you buying this land? You want to build a house?”

“It’s already bought. Already built.” I nod at the blueprints. “Take a closer look. Take your time. Do you recognize the floor plan?”

Tess lowers her gaze to the papers. She studies them for a moment, then sucks in a breath. “Is this Nash’s place?”

“No.” I gulp. “It’s yours.”

She looks up at me, blinking fast.

“I mean it’s yours, if you want to keep living there. I bought it. For you.” I take a beat. “It’s always been you, Tess.”

She gapes at me. “Spencer.” My name on her lips makes my heart pound.

“I know this is a lot to take in, and some people might think I moved too fast, but hey. That’s me. Spontaneous Spencer.”

Her eyes are wide and shining. “Superspontaneous.”

“Of course, I’m hoping to spend a lot of time there, too. But seriously. If at any point you decide this isn’t what you want—that I’m not what you want—the house is still a great investment for me. Thanks to a healthy down payment, I got a great rate on the mortgage. I’ve run the numbers and—”

“Stop.” She puts a finger to my lips. “Spontaneous Spencer was doing just fine.”

I take her finger—and all the rest of them—and tangle them in mine. “Do you think you could be happy in this house?”

She swallows hard, eyes welling up. “I think I could be happy anywhere with you.” Her voice is a whisper now, and a single tear rolls down her cheek. When it pools at the edge of her mouth, I lean in to kiss her.

The scent of cantaloupe. The press of lips. The salt of a tear.

Drops of joy.

She lifts her chin and I reach out, cupping her face with both my palms. “I love you, Tess McCoy.”

“I love you too. Like a lot.”

Her words ring so loud and true, my own waterworks are about to turn on. “You really get to me, you know that?”

Her lashes flutter. “It’s my tuba impersonation, isn’t it?”

Now we’re both laughing instead of crying.

With Tess, I just might laugh forever.
