“Ha!” I chuckle a little too loudly, bobbing my head so—from Frank’s perspective—Tess and I appear to be having a hilarious conversation. Then I realize, if he and Alice come over to us, things could get complicated. Fast.

If Frank says something typically obnoxious about my dating life, Tess might make it clear to him that we’re not on a date. Why did my stupid subconscious think coming here was a good idea? I’ve got to keep Frank away from Tess.

“What can I get you?” I ask, sliding off my stool. “Like I said before, it’s my treat. Since you got me the job and all.”

“Hmm.” She glances up at the menu written in chalk on the wall above the counter. Then she taps at her chin. “Let me think.”

“No time to think,” I blurt. Frank starts ambling our way, one arm slung over Alice’s shoulder.

Tess frowns. “But I haven’t even looked at—”

“I’d better get in line,” I tell her.

“There is no line. Bev’s just standing there all by herself. Why are you being so weird?”

“I’m not beingsoweird. I’m not weird at all. No weirdness.”

“I only want to—”

“Just text me what you want. Or better yet, I’ll go ahead and get you one of everything!”

“But—”

“I’ll be back in a jiffy.” As I turn to intercept Frank, I catch Tess’s jaw drop.In a jiffy? What normal man says the wordjiffy? If I’m trying to convince her I’m not being weird, that is the opposite of helpful. Still, I don’t have time to rectify the situation.

Especially using words likerectify.

At this point I should probably duct tape my mouth shut and call it a night.

But I can’t risk my brother talking to Tess.

Somebody send help. Please.
