MESS:I don’t need luck. I just need you to get here on time tonight.

ME:You DO remember who this is, right?

MESS: I do.

ME:Save me a s’more.

Tess sends back a string of heart-eye emojis, and my chest contracts. I know she’s just amped about camp, and reacting to the thought of s’mores. That girl sure does love her chocolate. But I can’t help wishing a single one of those heart-eyes was directed at me.

And I can’t believe I’m wishing that.

I head to the break room to grab a newspaper and wash my hands before my shift. When I show up to clock in, Kayla’s there with her badge out ready to swipe too. We’re both three minutes early.

Timeliness. Responsibility.

Kayla takes a step back. “After you.”

Kindness. Generosity.

We clock in five seconds apart, then walk together to the reference desk. Before logging on to her computer, Kayla wipes her keyboard down.

Cleanliness. Respectfulness.

“Can I read that paper when you’re done?” she asks, offering me a bright smile.

Curiosity.Pretty.

She ticks the boxes.

But how about my heart?
