“With Kayla Herrera. His partner at the reference desk. They’re on the same shift and everything.” Okay fine.Lovemight be an exaggeration, but it’s for a good cause. At least that’s what I tell myself.

“Hmm. Interesting.” She lifts a finger to tap her chin. “Spencer Crane alreadyhasa paramour.”

To be fair, I didn’t say that. Not in those exact words. And I’m not exactly sure what a paramour is. So, technically, I didn’t lie. Plus Mrs. Lockhart didn’t even ask me. She’s just assuming.

She’s also studying my face. “You’re quite sure there won’t be any danger of canoodling between you and Spencer?”

I know what canoodling is, and I can promise there’s zero danger in us doing that. “You can count on me.” I glance at the garage. “Spencer and I are a non-issue. We’re not interested in each other. At all.” In fact he’s so not interested in me, getting him onboard could be a struggle. But I don’t have a choice. I’m going to have to make him see the wisdom of my plan. Just like Mrs. Lockhart.

And cross my fingers that I haven’t made a terrible mistake.

“Well then. I suppose this solution could, in fact, be fortuitous. If Spencer agrees, we can proceed with camp as scheduled. But I’ll need to hear an answer from him immediately.”

“Oh! Just leave that to me. I’m sure you’re very busy. Being mayor and all.”

I grin, even as my insides churn. I’ve got Mrs. Lockhart convinced. Now I just have to get Spencer to agree.

Fortuitously.
